League of Legends Season 3 Ready to Go!

The League of Legends Championship Series starts tonight, with 16 North American teams battling to earn the right to play against the top teams from last season, with the European games beginning this Saturday.

It’s time for competitive League of Legends to get started up again.  Riot Games will be hosting the world’s best teams in games taking place all throughout the regular season to see who is going to earn the distinguished privilege of competing in their World Championship Finals.  Welcome to the League of Legends Championship Series (LCS)!

How it works

For the first half of Season 3, the top three teams each in North America and Europe from Season 2 will be joined by the top five teams in each of their respective regions’ live qualifier tournaments made up of top Ranked 5v5 teams.

The teams that qualify based on their performance last season are, for North America: TSM, Dignitas, and CLG.na.  For Europe: M5.Benq, SK Gaming, and the former members of CLG.eu once they have decided on their new moniker.

This means that the top teams of last season will be going toe-to-toe with teams entirely new to the League of Legends competitive world, giving everyone a chance at upsetting the current giants of the game, which should make for some exciting moments.

Once the LCS teams are determined, they will all play series of games, 28 total for each team, aired live on HD stream every week.  The North American teams will have their games on Thursdays and Fridays, while the European teams will play on Saturdays and Sundays.

The top two teams in each LCS region will get a bye while the bottom six in each will compete in a wildcard round to see which move on to battle the top teams and which will battle in a tournament against a new lineup of amateur teams looking for their shot at the top, trying to change the lineup of competing teams for the second half of Season 3.

All-Stars and Second Half

After the promotion tournament to decide the lineup of teams for the second half of the League of Legends Championship Series Riot Games will host an All-Star tournament.  This tournament will take the best players in the world and arrange them onto regional teams to compete against each other, with hints of extremely high stakes.

Once that tournament is completed the second half of the LCS will commence.  It will use the exact same format as the first half, but this time with teams competing not to retain their spot but to actually see who will go on to compete in the World Championships.

Get Hyped!

The games get started tonight for the North American qualifiers, and the potential for exciting play is already high.  16 teams enter, only five will make it out the other side to get the chance to be champions of the League of Legends!
