Acer Predator 8: epic or flop?

Acer continues to hold a strong relationship with gamers as they announced their new mini monster “Predator 8 GT-810,” a gaming-focused Android tablet shown off numerous times before.

The slate comes up with four front-facing speakers that said to provide “virtual surround sound” with an enhanced tactile feedback via “Predator TacSense” technology for more immersive gameplay.

Acer Predator 8 GT-810 specs:

  • Android 5.1 Lollipop-powered
  • 8-inch display with a 1920 x 1200-pixel resolution (zero air gap, IPS, with Predator ColorBlast tech for 100% NTSC color gamut)
  • Intel Atom x7 processor with Intel HD Graphics (Gen 8 LP)
  • 2×2 MIMO wireless technology, 802.11a/b/g/n wireless
  • 8.7mm thin, 350 grams light
  • 64GB of internal storage, support for microSD cards of up to 128GB

The Predator 8 will launch on November 6 in North America with $299 price tag, with Newegg having exclusive on the sales for the first two weeks. The “rest of the world” will be able to get one earlier in October, with prices at €349 in Europe and ¥2499 in China.

Epic or Flop?

Looking at the specs with Intel’s Atom x7 and 2GB of RAM, Predator 8 GT-810 can run almost all current and future Android games. But for me, aside from the alien/devilish look, Acer doesn’t really show innovation and just trying hard to impress squeeze gamer’s milk. In fact, the Xiaomi Mi Pad is at the same benchmarks with Nvidia Tegra K1 and 2GB RAM under its belt.

What mobile gamers need is the “Dual-Boot” functionality, which allows you to run both Android and Windows at once.

Take a fast look at this CloudPad Epic 8.9 (a company from the Philippines). Excluding the mediocre specs, Dual Boot will give you the power to choose between Android and Windows on boot, take a note also of its USB OTG that lets you play games from your thumb drive/flash drive. Xiaomi reportedly will use “Dual Boot” too on their upcoming Xiaomi Mi Pad 2.

For me, with $300, I think Acer is just going to sink in the crowded place of Android Devices. The company needs to have either unique specs, features, or pricing. And I have a feeling that Dual Boot is a feature that gamers really want!
