Mighty No. 9 is nominated for Most Notable Kickstarter in the 3rd annual Dragon Slayer Awards

It is time once again for the Dragon Slayer Awards. Held by Guild Launch, GameSkinny’s sister site, this is the third year that the Dragon Slayer Awards are being held. This year, there are 4 entries in the Most Notable Kickstarter category, and here is one of them: Mighty No. 9.

As many of you may know, Kickstarter is a website that allows people to list their ideas online and get them funded by the community. If you like an idea, you are able to donate money towards that project, and help provide the funds needed to complete that project. This past year, Comcept’s Mighty No. 9 was not only a popular project, but it was also a runaway success.

Mighty No. 9 is the brainchild of Keiji Inafune, one of the original creators of Mega Man. Dubbed a spiritual successor by many, Mighty No. 9 takes many hints from its older cousin, and rightly so, as the game’s development team includes many Mega Man veterans. And it is filling the hole left by Capcom’s major series, as seen by the successful Kickstarter campaign.

Mighty No. 9 was first shown by Inafune and his team at the 2013 Penny Arcade Expo. The game’s Kickstarter campaign began on August 31, 2013. The initial goal for the game started at $900,000. It met that in two days. After that, Comcept began setting up stretchgoals for the campaign, which were all easily met. These goals included new game modes, such as boss rush and turbo modes, a support character, and additional stages. The additional goals even included ports to the PlayStation 3 and 4, Wii U, Xbox One and 360, PS Vita, and the 3DS (the game was originally meant for PC).

At the end of the campaign, the game had reached over $4,000,000. It is one of the most successful Kickstarter campaigns ever, and reached 400% of its original goal. There have been over 67,000 backers supporting the game, most pledging $20 or more. This project has proven that gamers still want classic Mega Man style gameplay, and that they feel Comcept are the ones to deliver.

During this campaign, Comcept has helped keep the fans involved. As the Kickstarter page states: “Classic Japanese side-scrolling action, evolved and transformed by Keiji Inafune, an all-star team of veteran Mega Man devs…and YOU!” The studio has kept all backers in the loop with videos and concept art, and let backers help choose characters, challenges, and enemies. There has been a lot of input from the fans, and it seems Comcept listening.

I have faith in Comcept and Mighty No. 9. If the game is as great as its Kickstarter campaign was, we will have a solid gaming experience.

What do you think? Do you feel Mighty No. 9 had the most notable Kickstarter campaign this year? Go vote for the Dragon Slayer Awards!
