My Love/Hate Relationship With The Gaming Industry

I've always had a love/hate relationship with the gaming industry; here are two points as to why.

For the longest time I’ve had a love/hate relationship with the gaming industry. Albeit, my loving side wins over, hence why I am here and still writing about it day after day. Unfortunately, the hate side could be growing, even as we move into the next-gen of consoles and gaming. So, here is one love and one hate piece of my relationship with the gaming industry

I absolutely love that there so many awesome titles continuing to come out year after year.

These gems may be marred with the constant platforming indie titles that seem to release every week, but they shine through all the same. Developers may exploit certain genres that are popular at the moment (survival genre), but the games released tend to be top-notch.

I play the majority of them gladly and will continue to do so. Just check out my Rust guide for proof. The recent announcement of The Evil Within release dates is a single point towards why I love the industry. I may have to wait a long, long time for the game to come out. But the return of the survival-horror genre will be incredible beyond all expectations. The next-gen consoles have reignited my love of games, though it never fully subsided, and I look forward to everything these next few years will have to bring us.

Unfortunately all of these awesome releases are bogged down with the annual titles.

Call of Duty is at the forefront as being guilty for this. Each year another copy is released with little to no changes whatsoever. Assassin’s Creed is a better series, but the annual releases will get tiring, in fact they did. I refused to touch the first few releases after the first one, I played a bit of the original then didn’t pick up the series until the third game came out. A few more and the ideas may fall short, there is only so much you can come up with within the span of a year.

Sports games tend to be annual, I have given up on those long ago. Each year the only thing that changes is the box art, a new year is added after the title and a new character is featured on the front. The gameplay is nearly the exact same as before, with some minor tweaks and some graphical changes and the $60 price tag. I am unsure of how fans keep eating these up year after year; it baffles me. But to each their own.

My love/hate relationship with the gaming industry will continue on until the day I die.

There will always be things I don’t like, just as there will always be things I do like. Being realistic, I am sitting on the outside of the industry, my opinion doesn’t change much within this world. It can certainly help some users find the right games for themselves, however.

What do you love/hate within the gaming industry today? I’d love to find out, let me know in the comments below.
