Destiny: The Taken King Dev Interview Surprises Everyone

The Taken King Creative Director caught fans off guard in an interview about the expansions price tag

Bungie has been catching a lot of frustration from fans over the $40 price tag of Destiny’s latest expansion The Taken King. Fans became even angrier when it came to light that Bungie planned to release a $90 Legendary edition that would include the base game and the last two expansions along with 3 new emotes (something only hardcore players get much use out of) and exclusive exotic weapons. Meaning new players would be able to get all of Destiny’s content for less than original adopters.

So not only will new Destiny players be able to get all of the game’s content for less; hardcore players will have to re-buy content they already own to get all that The Taken King has to offer. It is easy to see why players are frustrated with the new expansion.

Today, however, The Taken King creative director Luke Smith pushed many fans right over the edge.

In the Eurogamer interview, which you can read here, Smith surprised fans with his answers about the Taken Kings price tag and why gamers will buy it. According to Smith, Bungie believes that the content in the upcoming expansion more than justifies its price, even if the base game offered more areas and missions.

What shocked fans, and the interviewer, the most though was Smith’s thoughts about the three exclusive emotes:

Eurogamer: I do want them. I would buy them –

Luke Smith: If I fired up a video right now and showed you the emotes you would throw money at the screen.

It was a poor choice of words that solidified fans anger about the price of The Taken King expansion. Combined with Smith’s answers during the rest of the interview it paints Bungie in a bad light. Making it look like they’re more interested in attracting new players then keeping the ones they already have.

Community Manager Deej has stepped up after the interview released promising to explain how long time players will be rewarded in the next Bungie Weekly Update. Hopefully there Bungie will be able to better explain the reason behind The Taken King’s price tag and why new players are getting so much for less.

Until then, what do you think of Luke Smith’s responses and The Taken King Legendary edition content?
