Civilization Meets Minecraft in the New Mod: CivCraft

Like Minecraft and Civilization? Well now you can play both of them. At the same time!

If you’ve played Sid Meier’s Civilization and Minecraft then you might be surprised that the two have meshed together into a new mod for Minecraft dubbed: CivCraft. This new mod was released as an open source project on Github along with the server code and anti-cheat for the servers on their website.

For those who haven’t played Sid Meier’s Civilization, it’s a strategy game that overlooks a large map of land wherein you take control of a civilization that is trying to make its way through the top – whether that be through military dominance, economic success, or otherwise is up to the player entirely.

As for the minority of those out there that haven’t at least heard of Minecraft yet, it’s a first person survival sandbox game where players are tossed onto an island with no directive other than to survive. From there players can go spelunking, build, mine, and hunt for food. Eventually an end-game was added where the player must get to “The End” and slay the Ender Dragon.

” Rather than controlling an entire civilization, players play as individuals and must band together to form groups. Starting with small camps, players eventually found their own civilizations where they can claim and protect land, research technology, engage in diplomacy and wage wars with other civilizations.”

CivCraft meshes these two games together into one large strategy gamespanning across a Minecraft world. According to the CivCraft wiki it’s extremely difficult to win a game of CivCraft, but possible. They say when the game is won, the entire map is reset and the players restart again on equal footing so everyone is on a level playing field when beginning the game.

However, the pride and joy of having won a game of CivCraft amongst your peers is not the only thing that should make you strive to win. Should a player win, their name will be placed on the Hall of Fame section on the CivCraft website and in the future could potentially even receive an aesthetic to show they have been a victor of the game.
