FFXIV: Official Statement on Server Wipe

There will be no server wipe!

The official Final Fantasy XIV twitter account @FF_XIV_EN has announced there will be no server wipe before Early Access. The players who were locked out of the game due to the 3102 error over the weekend were complaining and asking for a server wipe. Due to the fact effected players felt an unfair advantage was given to those that were able to play they wanted everyone to be on equal footing.

What this means

Everyone who got to play during open beta will retain all progress they made on their characters. Anything you had by shutdown will remain on your characters when you login during Early Access or Official Launch. While I was personally effected on my main account I was still able to make considerable progress on my character so I would have been disappointed if that got wiped going into Early Access.

Is it fair?

In my opinion, yes. Open betas are usually just a final stress test on the servers before they go live, so whether you were actually able to play or not was the test. It wasn't a situation where you paid to play open beta, so there was no reason to delete everyone's data just because there were issues logging into the game. These issues helped isolate errors within the data centers enabling the developers to correct the problem.

If anyone else is as excited by this news as I am let me know in the comments below.

I was pretty much sure there wouldn't be a wipe, glad to get official word though. It doesn't really affect me one way or another. I was experimenting with different characters, plus I didn't get on the server I wanted. If the server is available during earl access, then I'll be starting over anyway. Even if i wasn't level 20 isn't that hard and like it was mentioned, the point in open beta wasn't to get a head start on the game.

the possibility was there though. I'm just glad SE stuck to their guns on not wiping the servers.

Agreed, I've personally decided to stick to my GW2 for now, since I'm having way too much fun with my guild, if/when things start to die out I most likely will be looking in FFXIV's direction but none the less kudos to Square-Enix for not cratering to people whining they couldn't get into the beta test.

For the most part FFXIV will be more PvE based than say AION or GW2 (World vs World), so It's not like being a few levels behind is going to hurt your very much overall at launch.

Then again Square-Enix doesn't revolve around investors like alot of other MMO's looking to maximize initial sales to pay off deficits so its easier for them to do so.

I think it's kinda hilarious how people can actually expect them to delete everyone's data just because they didn't get what they wanted... I got kicked out... i had log in issues... yes... I'm frustrated as hell with some aspects on how they handled this beta test... but thats what it is... a Test.. a FREE test... asking to delete everyone else's progress is just stupid.. and its a reflection on how todays youth is... bitch and moan because you don't get your way... Go back to WoW!

you get people like that in any game. There is no stereo typical game that they belong to.

IMO think there should be a total wipe - anything that gives players an unfair advantage over another (generally that's an exploit/3rd party programme etc) should be removed. That said, perhaps it is nice as a Beta tester to get something for your troubles? In which case, be happy with whatever progres you were able to hold on to I guess. A few months after release it probably won't make a lot of differerence anyway....

Honestly since the cap was level 20, there wasn't a whole lot to get ahead on. I got my lancer from 1 to 20 in one sitting. I didn't even finish the available story quests because I wanted to save them for when my Lancer could benefit from them.

I do think beta players forget that they're actually there to TEST the game, not get a free ride to greatness. Calls for people to start on an "equal footing" seems bit sad. Surely the whole point about Final Fantasy is its immersive world and narrative (bad voice acting aside)? Especially as FFXIV is designed very much with solo players in mind, as opposed to heavily cooperative gameplay approach of FFXI. It's not a vehicle to make yourself superior over your peers.

    So, good on Square Enix.
