Minecraft Company, Mojang, Has a Decade to Become Profitable

Mojang has set a goal of 10 years to create their next successful title.

Minecraft is a hugely popular game by indie developer Mojang. Released in 2011, it has shipped to a variety of platforms. YouTube videos have millions of views on the subject and Let’s Play videos for Minecraft alone.

Mojang has released two other titles, but they have not done nearly as well as Minecraft. Out of the two titles, one is a third-party product completed in collaboration with Oxeye Game Studio called Cobalt

This could all come to an end in 10 years. Co-founder Markus Persson, also known as “Notch”, has stated in an interview with Rolling Stone of a new plan at the company. If the company can not come up with a title to compare to the success of Minecraft, Mojang will close its doors. Persson told Rolling Stone:

“We just have 10 fun years, and then, the last year, we’d say to our employees, ‘If we don’t make any money this year, Mojang is going to be dead. So you might want to look for new jobs.'”

A decade gives Mojang plenty of time to come up with a successor to Minecraft. Versions for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, and Xbox One are still in the works for release.
