Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain Mixes Up Stealth Mechanics

The Phantom Pain changes the stealth formula - but is this a bad thing?

As reported by Joystiq we may be seeing some significant changes to how we slither as Snake (or should I say Big Boss) in Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.

During a press-only gameplay reveal, famed director Hideo Kojima displayed some of the new stealth mechanics that will be used in the upcoming game. One major difference that may upset some fans is the changes in the alert system. When spotted by an enemy, Big Boss will be given the opportunity to dispatch (A.K.A. brutally kill) the enemy soldier unlucky enough to have seen him. This aborts the famous Metal Gear alert state and allows Big Boss to remain hidden without an alarm being raised.

**Ahh! KILL IT!**

The focal point of this is a game-changing experience for the Metal Gear franchise: In past installments, if you are seen, you’re better off hiding from your aggressor as they could soon overwhelm you in numbers. However, here, you are encouraged to engage and deal with the threat. The true questions is whether or not this will make Metal Gear V feel less like a Metal Gear game and more like a tactical third-person-shooter.

**At least it’s not this crap again.**

Needless to say, Kojima has pulled off weirder stunts than this – but I am still worried. Let’s just wait until we see some of this in action (which will likely be during Tokyo Game Show) before we start trying to crucify Kojima. In Kojima We Trust.

What do you think about the changes to tactical espionage action in The Phantom Pain? Do you have trust in Kojima, or is this getting sacrilegious with the tried and true mechanics of Metal GearSound off in the comments down below and maybe we can sneak into a base together and take their snacks!
