In Heroes of the Storm, Tyrael is a melee warrior with a kit that lets him deal damage, protect allies, and control team fights.

Tyrael is a great laning partner with any support, specialist, or ranged character. He can also perform well with another melee, but there are better characters to lane with.

This guide will break down into five categories:

  • Starter Abilities – The abilities your character starts with at the beginning of the match.
  • Heroic Abilities – Pick from one of these two ultimate-like abilities at team level 10
  • Talents – The character improvements you can choose from to custom build your hero
  • Talent Builds – Recommended builds that I have personally found success with
  • Playstyle Tips – Extra information about the character to help you play your best

Talent Builds

Tank/Support Tyrael
  • Path of the Warrior: Tanks can always use extra health.
  • Cleansing Sacrifice (E): Great for helping your allies survive fights.
  • Battle Momentum: Cooldown reduction is always useful.
  • Sanctification (R): This ability can really help you win team fights.
  • Zealotry (W): Gives you more shield time and makes the explosion deal even more damage. Great for standing in the middle of a team fight.
  • Atonement (Trait): Faster resurrections can mean the world during the late game phase.
  • Holy Arena (R): Makes your team even more effective in fights.

This build helps you tank and support. Your E is invaluable to keeping your allies alive. Your R is something you will want to use in crucial moments during team fights to keep your allies, particularly high damage squishy characters like Nova, alive long enough for them to wipe the enemy team.

Damage Dealing Tyrael
  • Horadric Reforging (Q): This increases the damage of your biggest damage dealing ability.
  • Vampiric Assault: This gives you sustain for the laning phase.
  • Angel’s Grace (Q): This is great for chasing enemies.
  • Judgment (R): This gives you another damage dealing ability while also being a great way to set up team fights.
  • Burning Rage or Zealotry (W): If you use your W a lot, take Zealotry. If not, take Burning Rage.
  • Holy Might (Q) or Angelic Barricade (Q): If you are having a hard time keeping your enemies from escaping, take Angelic Barricade. If not, take Holy Might.
  • Angel of Justice (R): This allows you to spam Angel of Justice even more.

This build allows you to deal a ton of damage. This is the build you will want to take when your team already has a tank/initiator kind of character.

Tyrael Playstyle Tips

Punish Them With Punishing Blade
  • Your Q is your main damage dealing ability.
  • You can teleport to where your sword is by pressing Q again after using the ability.
  • This is great for chasing down enemies.
  • This is also great for getting yourself killed if you go behind a group of enemies.
  • Be smart when using your Q.
The Ultimate Sacrifice
  • This is the ability that keeps your allies alive when the enemy does a high damage skill.
  • Do not use it unless your ally is going to take a ton of damage or possibly die.
  • Try to save it for when they are going to be hit by a big attack like Nova’s Triple Tap.
Sanctification is the Best
  • Sanctification is one of the best skills in the game.
  • This is the ultimate team fight ability.
  • This will keep your damage dealers alive long enough for them to take out one, if not two enemy heroes.
  • Coordinate with your team while using it.
  • Try not to be in the middle of the enemy team when using it or they will focus you and kill you immediately.
