A hero with a great mix of offense and defense, Grass Knuckles is the next in our deck resource guide set. He may not be the most flashy, but he’s almost as versatile as they come and should be a welcome addition to any Plants vs. Zombies Heroes player’s hero set.

Grass Knuckles is compatible with Guardian and Mega-Grow cards. This combination means he can not only defend with the best of them, but dish out some serious damage with well-planned Plant buffs. This combination makes him a force to be reckoned with.

Perhaps unsurprisingly Grass Knuckles excels at buffing his most useful plants while protecting them with a healthy mix of the Guardian tribe’s Nuts. Many Mega-Grow Plants either buff themselves, other Plants, or are reliant on other Plants’ buffs.

The defensive cards in Guardian really lend themselves well to Mega-Grow’s buff-oriented playstyle and let you build a deck you can dominate either mid or late game with a balanced strategy of offense and defense.

Any Grass Knuckles deck is going to make use of Nuts for defense, but the types of buffing plants you want besides those is up to your playstyle. Try not to get too spread out with your buffs and consider going with Peas and/re bonus attacks for your main offense.

Notable card combinations

These combinations are laid out with the most important card bolded and followed by a plus sign (+) with cards the important card will either affect or be affected by. You can look at the card specifics in the tables below this section.

Below each combination briefly explains why these cards are good friends. Always remember card synergy when building a deck.

  • Party Thyme + Repeater, Bananasaurus Rex, Re-Peat Moss, Plant Food, Espresso Fiesta
    • Party Thyme allows you to draw a card each time another Plant does a bonus attack. These Plants all do bonus attacks.
  • Torchwood + Pea Pod, Peashooter, Black-Eyed Pea, Fire Peashooter, Repeater, Skyshooter, Sting Bean, The Podfather, Pea-Nut
    • Torchwood grants Peas behind it +2 Strength. These Plants are all Peas.
  • The Podfather + Pea Pod, Peashooter, Black-Eyed Pea, Fire Peashooter, Repeater, Skyshooter, Sting Bean, Pea-Nut
    • The Podfather grants other Peas +2 Strength and +2 Health when they are played. These Plants are all Peas.
  • Party Thyme + Bananasaurus Rex + Repeater, Re-Peat Moss, Plant Food, Espresso Fiesta, Plant Food, Fluorish
    • Party Thyme allows you to draw a card when a Plant does a bonus attack and Bananasaurus Rex gains +1 Strength and +1 Health when you draw a card. The other Plants here do bonus attacks, and Tricks synergize.
  • Potted Powerhouse + Bonk Choy, Pea Pod, Torchwood, Black-Eyed Pea, Cabbage-Pult, Grow-Shroom, Muscle Sprout, The Podfather, Skyshooter, Super-Phat Beets, Spineapple (+ Wall-Nut, Mirror-Nut, Prickly-Pear, Sweet Potato, Torchwood), Hibernating Bear, Steel Magnolia, Tough Beets, Smackadamia (+ all Nuts)
    • Potted Powerhouse gets +1STR/+1HP each time a Plant gains Strength or Health while Potted Powerhouse is still in your hand. These Plants all buff either themselves or other Plants.
  • Party Thyme + Bananasaurus Rex + Repeater, Re-Peat Moss, Plant Food, Espresso Fiesta, Plant Food, Fluorish
    • Party Thyme allows you to draw a card when a Plant does a bonus attack and Bananasaurus Rex gains +1 Strength and +1 Health when you draw a card. The other Plants here do bonus attacks, and Tricks synergize.
  • Spineapple + Wall-Nut, Mirror-Nut, Prickly-Pear, Poppin’ Poppies, Water Chestnut
    • Spineapple gives +2 Strength to Plants with no Strength when played. These Plants have no Strength.
  • Mirror-Nut + Wall-Nut, Water Chestnut, Small-Nut, Jugger-Nut, Pea-Nut, Pismashio
    • Mirror-Nut does 2 damage to the Zombie Hero when any of your Nuts are hurt. These Plants are all Nuts.

Don’t ignore these cards if you have them!

These cards may not all have synergy on their side like the ones mentioned above, but they are notable and worth considering adding to your decks.

Sweet Potato – She only cost 1 Sun, she has 3 Health, and she moves a Zombie to her lane when played. She’s got her uses, and those uses are all saving your more important Plants.

Sting Bean – You’re mostly going to be relying on Mega-Grow plants for your damage but Sting Bean is a reasonable addition to a Grass Knuckles deck simply for the Bullseye. Since she’s has a low Sun cost, she can be played to effect at most phases of a match.

Doubled Mint – If you can keep this card alive long enough to see it reach its potential, it can be the highest damage card in your deck. A good opponent will take it out before it gets that way, but if you get lucky and defend it properly Doubled Mint is a real beast as it doubles its Strength and Health each turn.

Fire Peashooter – This is a 2 Sun cost, 3 Strength, 2 Health card. That’s very strong for early game, and even better a bit later with a Torchwood supporting it.

Grave Buster – (Trick) The big benefit of Zombies with the Gravestone ability for a Zombie Hero player is that you, the Plant Hero player, can’t see what is in the grave before the battle phase starts. The Grave Buster wipes those pesky Gravestones out before they turn into a problem.

Steel Magnolia – This baby not only grants itself and whatever Plant is in its lane +2 Health, it grants +2 Health to every plant next door. This is an amazing card when you’ve got a Potted Powerhouse sitting in your hand gaining power.

Tough Beets – A great mid to lategame card, especially with the Team-Up Nuts in the Guardian tribe. He only starts with 1 Health but if he’s played when the field is stacked with Plants and Zombies he becomes an especially sturdy card with a very reasonable 6 Strength by default.

Soul Patch – Another amazing card, this time effectively keeping your hero alive. If you have one, use it. Every health point counts!

Muscle Sprout – This bad boy gains +1 Strength and +1 Health when you play another Plant. If you play this on its own during the early phases of a game your opponent will probably destroy it immediately, but if you play it when you have enough Sun to play multiple Plants in a turn it will have a great head start to whompville.

Super-Phat Beets – Like Tough Beets, play this guy when the whole board is stacked and watch his stats grow! Super-Phat Beets’s Strength and Health grow based on how many Plants and Zombies are on the field, making it potentially more dangerous for Zombie Hero than Tough Beets, though Tough Beets is great in its own way.

Espresso Fiesta – (Trick) If you want one really hard-hitting plant to really whomp on a particularly though Zombie or give the Zombie Hero the what-for, this is your Trick to play.

Wall-Nut Bowling – (Trick) Absolutely amazing offensive Trick that does 6 damage to each Ground lane. A late game monster with the ability to dent or outright kill almost anything the Zombie Hero can throw at you.

Fertilize – (Trick) Grants a plant +3 Strength and +3 Health. You simply need it for a Grass Knuckles deck.

Compatible cards

Below are all the Mega-Grow and Smarty cards currently available in Plants vs. Zombies Heroes that you can use with Green Shadow. There are separate tables for Plants and Tricks.

A card’s rarity is noted next to their name in parenthesis. The more rare a card is, the less likely you are to get it from a pack and the more it costs to craft. The rarities are Common (C), Uncommon (UC) , Rare (R), Super Rare (SR), and Legendary (L).
