Back in 2013, Badland made waves in the mobile gaming circuit as a quirky side-scroller in which you guide flocks of weird flying porcupines through a dark forest full of deadly sawblades. With its striking visuals and addicting gameplay, Badland earned Apple’s much-coveted Game of the Year award and got the greenlight for console adaptations.
Earlier this summer, the Game of the Year Edition made it onto Steam, Xbox One, and Playstations 3, 4, and Vita. After making tentative plans to join the party at the end of June, Nintendo fell a little behind in the race to the Badland. Now it’s finally time for the game to bounce its way to the Wii U eShop.
At first glance, Badland looks like the anti-gravity product of a one-night stand between Limbo and Super Meat Boy. This bouncing baby, however, isn’t quite so cut and dry. The twist? All of your cute little playable monsters are entirely disposable. If you happen to drop one or two or twenty “Clones” into a bloody deathtrap, don’t be alarmed. There are plenty more where those came from. You only have to get one of the little boogers to the finish line to complete the level.
On the Wii U, you can experience over 100 HD levels taking you through four distinct stages: Dawn, Noon, Dusk, and Night. Badland‘s controls have been completely redone for consoles, booting the old touch-based floundering for analog stick precision. The Clones are surprisingly agile, moving as a single unit through their woodland home as it is slowly overrun by dangerous new machinery. It’s up to you to fluidly navigate your Clones through a variety of dynamic traps, unearthing the industrial invaders and ensuring the survival of the Clone race.
Badland: Game of the Year Edition will be available on the Wii U eShop on July 30th for $9.99.
