How to find the Uchigatana early in Dark Souls III

Give yourself a substantial advantage early on in Dark Souls III by finding the Uchigatana.

The Uchigatana is a powerful katana found in the first area of Dark Souls III. This katana has a bleeding effect against enemies, which is a huge plus -- especially this early on in your adventure. The Uchigatana, however, is easy to miss if you don't take the time to explore.

The first thing you have to do is make your way through the Cemetery of Ash, the opening area of the game. Soon, you'll find yourself up against the first boss of Dark Souls III, Iudex Gundyr. Once you've defeated Iudex, light the bonfire, open the door behind him and continue along the path to your right.

When you reach the top of the hill, you'll reach the entrance to the Firelink Shrine, but don't head in just yet. Instead, you're going to want to make a left and follow the path until you reach a set of stairs.  At the top of the stairs, you'll spot a lone figure wielding the Uchigatana -- and let's just say he's not the most friendly man you'll meet.

This enemy is particularly tough against starting characters, but with enough practice and patience, you can take him down and claim his Uchigatana as your own. I created a sorcerer as my starting character, so I was able to use mostly ranged attacks to deal damage, which was extremely effective.

If you don't have access to any ranged attacks just yet, it's still very possible to win this fight.  Lure him away from the stairs since there are cliffs you can easily roll off and make sure to keep dodging his attacks.  When he holds his katana out to his side, that's your chance to deal damage.  Keep repeating this strategy and the Uchigatana will be yours.

Although the Uchigatana is fast and can cause bleeding damage, it comes at a price with low durability, so be sure to either carry repair powder with you or visit the blacksmith every now and then.  The Uchigatana relies mostly on vertical slashes and lunges, which makes it extremely useful in areas with small corridors.  If you wish to wield the Uchigatana, you'll need 16 DEX and 11 STR, so it's time to start killing baddies and collecting souls!

I started the game as a Cleric, who starts with Heal and Force.

...and in the 20+ hours I have into Dark Souls III, blowing that swordsman off the cliff with Force is in my top 5 favorite moments, considering he killed me 4 times before I even thought of it.

No better feeling than watching him fall and laughing manically... PRAISE THE SUN!
