Xbox Reports Possible Smells Coming From The Controller

They did away with the controller smelling, but not the gamer.

by 5 months ago

The controller is the single device used as the interface between the player and the game. A plethora of funds helped innovate this next-generation of controllers. According to Kotaku.com, Microsoft has reportedly dumped $100 million dollars into their new controller.

Much like some folks were weary about the touchpad on the new PlayStation 4 controller, Xbox experimented with different prototypes too. One of those prototypes was a controller that would admit a smell through the controller itself. The example given by Zulfi Alam, Xbox's general manager for accessories:

"We looked at concepts like adding displays to the controller. We looked at concepts like adding smell. We built small slugs of different types of smells that could actually come out of a controller, like, as you walked through a jungle, you'd smell the flora."

As gimmicky as that may sound, I'd really like to try that thing out. Of course does that mean my house would then smell like a men's locker room after playing some NBA 2K14? I hope not, that might be the deterrent here (that's a joke folks). Unfortunately they've axed that feature, along with a touch screen.

Considering these guys went through 200 prototypes to conclude what is now a unique rumble feature in the triggers, better textured analog sticks, and a lighter controller, I feel more confident than ever in these next-gen controllers, and their ability to help the player delve into the atmosphere of any game... and you should too.

That's pretty interesting. It would be a cool concept if they carried it through. But that's just my opinion.

could you imagine going into a Duke Nukem bathroom and smelling that. Lol.

I think I would've been cool. I imagine hard to develop for though.

That would be a nightmare. I agree it probably would be hard to implement such a feature into a controller.. Unique concept though.

It'd be interesting to see what would happen if you ran out of the scent cartridges...could you imagine walking into GameStop and purchasing scent packets for your controller? haha.

I don't know that this idea could work but I still think it is cool that Microsoft is thinking outside the box like this. It definitely makes for interesting conversation material.

As crazy as it sounds, smells are starting to play a big part of entertainment immersion in THEATRE out of all places! The more sensitive-nosed of us noticed smells being pumped into the National Theatre, London, at certain parts of the performance of Danny Boyle's production of Frankenstein.

So why not from an Xbox controller? Whilst they're at it, maybe Microsoft can pop in a capsule of deodorant for the more...er..."dedicated" gamer! XD

That's interesting, I hadn't a clue that was going on. I should have delved past the article itself. I wonder what 'the book or Mormon" would smell like.
