Get an Xbox One for Only $399 If You "Ditch" Your PS3

Microsoft says if you wanna switch teams in the new generation, they'll toss you some extra cash.

Yeah, this sounds like something Microsoft would do. It'll probably work, too.

As found by a NeoGAF member, Microsoft is holding a special promotion: They'll sell you a fancy new Xbox One for only $399 ($100 less than the normal retail price) if you "ditch" your old PlayStation 3 at one of its stores in the US.

The picture you see here is from the company's email ad, and it's pretty straightforward. The offer is good through March 2 and requires that PS3s be in good working order. This actually applies to old Xbox 360s as well, but of course the PS3 takes center-stage in the ad.

It's not ironic that the PlayStation 4 retails for $399, and analysts have been saying for months that the price difference really hurts Microsoft's new console. So, by doing this promotion, Microsoft essentially kills two birds with one stone: They make the price the same as the competition, and they "turn" a former PlayStation fan into an Xbox fan.

Of course, a lot of people are multi-console owners these days, so that won't always be true. It's an obvious enticement to make the switch, though.

This will likely prove effective

People just love to save money, especially when we're talking about a relatively expensive item. A great many have held off on the Xbox One simply because of that prohibitive $500 price tag. Microsoft forces Kinect on you, too, which not everyone wants. Maybe this offer will attract a lot of consumers.

It's not like Sony didn't do this exact same thing, multiple times, leading up to and during E3, and even a bit more leading up to release. Sony totally road the wave when Microsoft was getting it's backlash. I know for a fact some board members sat around a table and thought, nows our chance, we need to put Microsoft down.

Another thing I find funny is about the price of the PS4. If you want to get the PS camera, an extra controller, anything else, you are still spending as much or really close to what you would spend on the Xbox. The only difference I think is that the Xbox's kinect is actually worth the money.

I covered E3 and all events surrounding it. At no point did Sony insinuate getting rid of a Microsoft console so you could buy a PlayStation. They cited Microsoft's horrifically stupid policies (that had to be rescinded due to popular outcry, and which people have already forgotten), but of course, any company - including MS - would've done the exact same thing. The competition drops the ball, you pick it up and run with it. MS dropped it FIRST. Sony just capitalized on the mistake.

As for the price, what you speak of is meaningless. It doesn't matter whether you think Kinect is worth the money; that's subjective. The point is that MS FORCES you to buy it. You don't really think everyone HAS to buy a PlayStation camera, do you? Consumers don't like being coerced into buying an accessory, whether they want it or not.

This is damage control from MS, plain and simple.

This is the kind of thing you expect them to do with a 360 and not a PS3. Personally I find it in poor taste. I was a huge microsoft/xbox fan after the launch of the 360. Now I personally just don't care. This console cycle started off nice with Sony and MS congratulating each other in good launches. I thought maybe we saw a turning point in the so called console wars but I guess I was just fooling myself.

This whole Idea sounds like rookie marketing guy's idea. I think sure a few people might do this but over all it won't make a dent in their sales at all. I have seen very few commercial and ads for PS4 but by all accounts it is out selling the xbox almost 2 to 1. Where as I can't go anywhere or watch anything without an Xbox ad. Feels like MS is trying too hard. Oh well, that is my 2 cents anyways.

I've seen tons of PS4 commercials, way more than Xbox commercials.

Wow. Microsoft is really going low on this one, but it'll definitely work for some people.

I have to admit, having a 360 I am very tempted.
