The Last Of Us: What Remains

“Don't wake us for the end of the world unless it has very good special effects.”― Roger Zelazny

The Last of Us isn’t in stores until June 12, but if you can’t quite wait that long you could always shuffle your fungus infected self over to What Remains Films to watch their unofficial live action web series by Manifest Films.

Manifest Films states that the series is “a unique piece of content chronicling the journey of three unlikely friends as they attempt to survive in a world 10 years after a new strain of fungus has all but wiped out the human race.” They also claim they are “not endorsed by or affiliated in any way with Naughty Dog or any Sony company“, but even though it doesn’t follow the game’s story exactly it’s pretty evident that the series is influenced by The Last of Us.

In What Remains, the human race has been overrun by “parasitic fungus which affects its host by altering its brain and causing it to spread..” and “…upon infection, the human host’s brain develops into spores, which are then expelled through the forehead thus spreading the infection to additional hosts.” These new infected human brains are connected, and thus their thoughts are formed as a collective singular whole.

The storyline so far follows characters David, Alex, and Andre. David is a stubborn bastard that refuses to stand off the ground he calls home; he survives on the outskirts of the remaining human colonies. Alex is the Chicago born sister of Andre, and her only goal currently is to find her lost brother. They were separated earlier before the start of the series, when Andre was defending her. By a twist, Andre is stuck somewhere between affected and human; he has some sort of resistance to the fungi. Alex is hopeful this could be the salvation humans have been waiting for.

As the last of us goes, David and Alex are in for a hell of a fight. Check out Episode One below!

I'm a 29 year old Jersey girl who loves games. I currently work full time, volunteer part time at this awesome non-profit called Amman Imman, and go to school part time. I also train in jiu jitsu. So time isn't quite on my side (unlike that song says). I have been trying unsuccessfully for years to clone myself so I can devote one of me to boring stuff like working and laundry - thus allowing more time for gaming. I'm willing to offer large sums of imaginary money to any who can make this happen.
