Mighty No. 9 was a runaway success story on Kickstarter. Their campaign started August 31, 2013, and by the end of the campaign the developers had $3,845,170 pledged to them. That’s impressive, considering they initially only wanted $900,000. They then gave us the original release date of April, 2015.

And after several delays, it’s now finally ready to be released a year later — and it officially launches tomorrow, June 21st.

What’s Mighty No. 9?

Mighty No. 9 is a callback to the Mega Man franchise with a few twists. You still get your new weapons after beating bosses, and the gameplay still revolves around jumping and shooting. But instead of merely blasting your enemies, now it’s optimal to dash into them while they’re in a weakened state. Some segments of the game will involve Beck, the protagonist, shifting forms.

The game comes with a few additional features, like a mode where you get to play as one of the boss characters, Ray. She’s this universe’s version of the sword-swinging Zero, with a largely melee orientated playstyle. You’ll need to play through her DLC to unlock her, which will be free for Kickstarter backers. Everyone else has to buy it. Other modes include online co-op, a challenge mode, boss rush, and small modifications to gameplay like a mode where you’re eliminated in a single hit.

Mighty No. 9 has certainly had its bumps in production. But there’s always the chance of us getting a surprise hit. Personally, I think they might have been releasing bad trailers that don’t give the game a fair shake. The one you can see on the top of the header shows a glimpse of more challenging gameplay.

For Japan and North America, Mighty No. 9 will be releasing tomorrow on the PS3, PS4, Wii U, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Windows, OS X, and Linux. For PAL regions, you have to wait until June 24, 2016. 3DS and PS Vita version release dates are to be announced.
