The Beginner’s Guide to No Man’s Sky

Lost in No Man's Sky's massive galaxy? We're here to help.

No Man’s Sky is absolutely massive, and even with a pretty comprehensive tutorial, it’s still a lot to take in.  Here’s a list of tips and tricks that will let you take to the stars in no time

Gather Resources

Aside from the materials you need to craft upgrades and repairing your damaged ship, keep an eye on your life support, hazard protection, and multi-tool to see when you need to refuel.  You’ll find that you need a lot of isotopes early on for your multitool, which you can generally find in either red crystals or organic-looking structures.  Also, be sure to keep an eye on your ammo, as you’ll have to refuel it from a menu without pausing the game.  Running out midbattle can spell certain doom if you can’t get away fast enough.

Manage Your Inventory

Always do your best to consolidate your inventory as much as you can. Minerals can stack up to 250 each, so having two stacks in different inventories at 100 each is a waste of space.  You’ll run out of inventory really quickly in the early game, so everything you can do helps.

Keep on the Lookout for Sentinels

The sentinels are everywhere, so do your best not to alert them.  They’ll not only attack if they see you damaging the scenery/killing wildlife, they’ll scan for damage and attack you if you’re nearby.  If one catches you, destroy it as soon as possible so they won’t call for backup.

Explore!

This one seems obvious, but the most fun part of No Man’s Sky is the exploration.  Don’t be afraid to keep moving forward, as the location of your ship will always be marked on the map.  If you see something cool on the horizon, be sure to check it out.  You might be the only one to see it.

Light the Beacon!

At each unique site, there’s a spot that you can go to to “discover” the area.  Be sure to activate that if you want the credit, or the ability to rename it.

Do the Side Quests

Sometimes, when you get to a certain location, you’ll find signs of life.  It could be a message in mysterious runes, or it could be an unanswered distress beacon.  Go check them out.  I found a higher level ship less than a half hour into the game this way.

Upload your discoveries

Just because you scanned it, doesn’t mean it’s uploaded.  Go to the options menu for a list of all of the star systems, planets, and creatures you’ve found. From there, you can rename them or upload them as is for units.

Follow these tips, and you’ll be a galactic explorer in no time.  Get ready to take to the stars and settle a new system.
