Need to find the perfect gift and price point for your Magic player? Check out the options before you buy the wrong thing!

So you know your relative plays Magic, and you know they would love it as a gift, but you don't know what's the right thing to buy for them. Since MTG is a collectible card game, buying cards or packs is almost like buying a lottery ticket for them. It could be well worth it if the right cards show up in those packs, or it could be useless. But there's more than just boosters. There are plenty of Magic accessories at various price points for you to choose from.

Holiday Gift Box

The holiday gift box includes four random packs of the most recent set. If you take those costs out, you're only paying $4.00 for the box and the goodies that come with it. The box is designed to hold over 2,000 cards, and includes dividers with sticker labels. Not to mention there is an alternate art to boot, with plenty of land for deckbuilding.


Fat Pack

Price: $32.95

The fat pack is similar to the Holiday Gift Box, but at a higher price point. You get 9 card packs inside, with two deck boxes and a storage box included. If you're trying to get someone into the game, this is an excellent option, because it also includes a life counter, rules, and a learn to play guide.


Commander Decks

Price: $16.99 - $35.99

Commander decks are prebuilt decks that include unique cards displayed in the front window for use in a specific format. The box also includes 15 cards that are not available anywhere else. Because of the limited nature of many cards included in these sets, you should buy them if your player plays Commander, Legacy, or Vintage formats.


Deck Boxes

If you know your player's favorite color in the game, deck boxes are an excellent choice for gifts. The higher the quality, the more appreciated they will be. They can range from simple, plastic boxes to fancier, leather boxes with magnetic clasps.


Play Mat

Just like card boxes, play mats come with an incredible amount of variation. They can be plain colors or include fantastic images, such as the one above. Play mats sometimes include life and other trackers on the side. If you're not sure which mat to get, going with the best image for the player is a good idea. There are even some sites that will create a custom mat using one of your own images. The price skyrockets for mats like that, but the personal value is worth it.


Card Sleeves

Out of all your options on this list, card sleeves have the most variations on them. They are usually defined by the designs on the back. They typically come in packs of 50 each, and at least two packs are necessary to be useful to a player. There are different sizes of sleeves. If you check out a local game store, anyone behind the counter should be able to tell you what size sleeve Magic cards use.


Booster Packs

You can never go wrong with a few booster packs. These let you decide exactly how much you want to spend on the gift. If you're feeling really generous, an entire box usually costs around $110.00 on discount websites, and the gift would surely be noticed!


Card Binder

With all those cards you're buying for Christmas, your player will need a place to show of the new rares they have to trade. Nearly any binder will work these days, but Ultra-Pro makes binders specifically for gaming cards. You can rest assured that those cards will be in the best condition possible for trades.


Magic: Funko Pop Figures

Funko Pop figures bring an unusual cartoon cute factor to anything. Including some of the most dangerous planeswalkers in the Magic universe. Nearly anyone can love these figures as they display nicely alongside other Funko figures from other games and movies.

 


Magic T-Shirts

Rating: 4/5

These T-shirts are available in all the different mana colors and clans from the newest set, Khans of Tarkir. Your Magic player can show off their faction pride at their next tournament with any of these tees. Plus, the skull on the black T-shirt looks cool anyway.
