In the world of electronics, smaller and slimmer usually means more advanced.
Members of the gaming press have received an invitation from Sony, which hints at an impending hardware announcement. Some are thinking this involves the PlayStation Vita; others believe Sony is referring to the PS3:
“Following the biggest launch in PlayStation history, join us for an introduction to the slimmest.”
Don’t forget that Sony released slimmer model of their portable in Japan last year. It was 20 percent thinner and 15 percent lighter, although they replaced the OLED screen with an LCD display. At the time, Sony said they’d hadn’t thought about delivering the revamped Vita to the US or Europe. Is now the time?
Or, we could consider the possibility that the PS3 will get even slimmer. It’s common that after new hardware launches, the last-gen machines get the downsizing treatment. You may recall that the PS2 shrunk like crazy after the PS3 arrived. Some of the more ambitious think Sony is already going to issue a smaller PS4, but that seems a little unrealistic.
The Vita doesn’t need to be lighter, it needs more games
They can overhaul the handheld all they want. The only thing that’s going to make it more attractive in the eyes of consumers is more games. Sony could also lower the price again but really, above all else, gamers want options. They want multiple reasons to spend their hard-earned money on a new device. So far, there haven’t been that many reasons.
