Guild Wars 2: What We Know About the Revenant’s Skills, Weapons, and Utilities

Guild Wars 2's upcoming expansion, Heart of Thorns, is introducing a new class -- the heavily armored, blindfolded, master of warfare and the Mists, the Revenant. Here's what we know about Revenant skills and abilities.

One of the most exciting announcements surrounding the reveal of Guild Wars 2‘s first expansion is the Revenant — a third heavy armor class that wields the power of the mists and engages in brutal melee combat. Almost all of our information at this point comes from a single teaser video, but a lot of the Revenant’s skills and abilities were revealed there. Here are the skills and abilities we know about for sure:

The Hammer

Much like the Mesmer’s greatsword, the Revenant’s hammer is a hefty ranged weapon that packs a punch. The Points of Interest livestream revealed that not only does it look cool, but it uses a bunch of neat new tech in its abilities:

  • Hammer Bolt: Hurl your weapon at enemies, striking foes in its path.
    • Simple and straightforward, this line attack pierces and has a 100% projectile finisher chance.
  • Coalescence of Ruin: Slam the ground with your hammer, creating a cascading eruption of energy.
    • This skill uses a cool new mechanic — cascade. Basically, there are three different ‘zones’ of damage, with the furthest point doing the most damage. You’ll want to line this up perfectly for the best effect.
  • Phase Smash: Leap through the mists to the target area. When you land, damage and chill foes in an area, then teleport back to your previous location.
    • A blast finisher and a shadowstep, this skill has tons of potential synergy (and looks cool too).
  • Field of Mists: Create a field from the mists that blocks incoming projectiles in front of you.
    • This is a very interesting skill — you create a shield in front of you that moves with you, allowing the Revenant to point it at whatever is causing her trouble. It’s also a dark field, allowing you to combo it with Hammer Bolt for easy lifesteal.
  • Drop the Hammer: Summon a massive hammer from the mists to strike the ground.
    • Nothing too fancy here — just a heavy, high-damage, blast finisher with a knockdown. Hammer time!

The Mace

So far, only the main hand skills for the mace have been revealed — it’s not clear if it will be an offhand too, but what we’ve seen looks pretty darn cool.

  • (Chain) Misery Swipe: Swing your mace at your foe / Anguish Swipe: Sweep your mace back for a second blow / Manifest Toxin: Deliver a crushing blow that sends toxic energy chaining back to enemies behind each target.
    • The mace auto-attack takes advantage of another cool technology, chaining. If you line your targets up right, you can send a stream of poison bouncing through all of them.
  • Searing Fissure: Smash your mace into the ground, causing flame to erupt from the Mists.
    • Nothing too fancy, just pulsing fire damage, but its already looking like the mace can stack a lot of painful conditions, giving it lots of PvP potential.
  • Echoing Eruption: Leap at your foe and deliver a massive attack that cascades outwards. Each area attack is a blast finisher.
    • Another cascading attack, as a blash finisher, Echoing Eruption has tons of combo potential (and looks really cool to boot).

The Axe

So far only the axe’s offhand skills have been shown, but they are pretty awesome.

  • Frigid Blitz: Hurl your axe at your target, damaging and chilling the foes the axe passes through. When the axe reaches your target, shadowstep to it and deliver a huge blow.
    • A skill with tons of utility, this attack does tons of damage and is unblockable, making it awesome for finishing a boss or spiking down a bunker in sPvP
  • Temporal Rift: Slice into the Mists, creating an unstable rift. After a short duration, the rift will collapse in on itself, pulling in enemies.
    • Another awesome utility skill, this applies torment, pulls, and deals damage, giving it lots of applications in both PvE and PvP.

 Legendary Skills: Jalis

The Revenant’s unique class ability allows you to ‘slot’ different legends from the mist, giving you new utility skills and abilities. One of the one’s we’ve seen so far is Jalis the dwarf.

  • Soothing Stone: Heal yourself and remove conditions. Gain retaliation for each condition removed.
    • A solid heal in its own right, the retaliation just makes this more perfect for tanky types.
  • Forced Engagement: Launch a chain at your target. When the chain connects with a foe, it slows and taunts them.
    • This skill uses two new conditions — slow and taunt, slowing down your enemies’ ability use and forcing them to attack you. Perfect for getting the boss off of your squishy friends or pulling that bunker away from the point.
  • Vengeful Hammers: Invoke hammers to circle around you, damaging foes.
    • A simple PBAoE, this is unblockable and does solid damage, with tons of potential for any combat situation.
  • Inspiring Reinforcement: Creates a stone road that damages and weakens foes as it’s created. Once it’s created, it will pulse, granting stability to allies.
    • A cool looking skill that will probably see tons of use in WvW, this uses cascading effects as well, making positioning very important for the revenant.
  • (Elite) Rite of the Great Dwarf: Channel the power of the Rite of the Great Dwarf to turn yourself and nearby allies to stone to reduce incoming damage.
    • A stunbreaker with huge damage reduction, this will no doubt be the bane of many power builds in sPvP and WvW.

Legendary Skills: Mallyx

The second legendary that we have seen is Mallyx, a powerful demon from Guild Wars. This legendary has some really neat synergy with conditions that allows it to control the flow of battle really well.

  • Empowering Misery: Heal yourself. Heal more for each condition currently applied to you.
    • Since Mallyx has tools to ignore or minimize conditions, this has the potential to be a very powerful heal.
  • Banish Enchantment: Deal damage to your foe. Remove boons from and apply confusion to that foe. Apply bonus confusion if you have equal or more conditions than the threshold applied to you.
    • Unblockable, powerful, with boon stripping and confusion as well, this skill can totally turn the tides of a battle, and will see plenty of use in PvP.
  • Unyielding Anguish: Leap toward the targeted area, tormenting foes and creating a demonic field that displaces enemies. Apply bonus torment if you have equal or more conditions than the threshold applied to you.
    • This skill uses displacement, the opposite of pull, giving it some really neat applications in sPvP and WvW.
  • Pain Absorption: Grant resistance to yourself and nearby allies. Absorb conditions from those allies, gaining additional resistance per condition.
    • This is what gives the Mallyx legend such awesome utility. With the new boon resistance to help mitigate the damage done by conditions, the Revenant can put all of the other skills to great use – healing more, doing bonus damage, and applying extra conditions, all while tanking the damage his allies would take.
  • (Elite) Embrace the Darkness: Summon the power of the legendary demon to transform into a powerful avatar. Increase all attributes, and copy conditions to nearby foes every few seconds.
    • Another skill with incredibly synergy, Mallyx’s elite can totally dominate a combat by turning his enemies’ conditions back on themselves, and with the bonus stats, the Revenant will be even harder to put down.

ArenaNet hasn’t told us how many weapon skills and legends there are left to be revealed, but there is sitll a lot we don’t know. Check back here regularly for updates and information!
