Mortal Kombat X Lets You Decide: DLC or Unlockable

Mortal Kombat X DLC raises the question: would players rather pay or play to unlock in-game content?

Throughout their history, games have utilized a reward system to give players a sense of satisfaction for accomplishing challenging tasks. However, somewhere down the line these rewards have lost their place – being converted instead to downloadable content (DLC). Mortal Kombat X offers a unique take on this trend, allowing players to choose between paying and playing.

The newest title in the franchise sees the return of the Krypt, a series staple that was first introduced in Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance. The Krypt allows players to use koins earned during gameplay to purchase characters, hidden fatalities, concept art, videos, and other additional content. In Mortal Kombat X, however, players now have the choice to purchase all of this as DLC.

For $19.99, players can make the in-game currency utterly useless, and use their real-life money to buy additional content instead.

This presents an interesting challenge to the current trend of DLC, which is coming dangerously close to imitating mobile gaming’s micro-transactions. The success of this particular downloadable content will surely be a huge red flag to Netherrealm and other developers saying: “People are lazy, let’s make them pay for everything!”

We’ve all but lost the good ol’ concept of “unlockable characters”. Could other game content follow suit? Will you be using koins or kash to unlock the secrets of Mortal Kombat X? Let us know in the comments below!
