1) Last Hit Minions

Last-hitting is a fundamental skill in League of Legends. The money and experience are extremely important for leveling up and getting items. But these are not the only reasons you need to learn how to last hit. Last hitting is an important skill for when you do not want to push up your lane. If you last hit, your minions will creep forward a lot slower than if you were auto attacking.

2) Auto Attack Minions

There are times when instead of last hitting, you will want to auto attack. Typically this will be done when you want to push forward to apply pressure, tower dive your enemy, or want to head back. Just be careful when you do this because it leaves you vulnerable to enemy jungler ganks.

3) Copy your opponent

If you are not sure what to do, just copy the enemy. If he auto attacks something, then do the same. The main idea is that the damage dealt to your creeps and his creeps will be really similar. This way, the lane will not push toward you and also will not get pushed towards the enemy.

4) To Waveclear or not to Waveclear

Knowing when to take down waves of creeps with your abilities is also a technique that needs practice. Clearing waves is not hard, but knowing when to clear waves is something that comes with experience. If you want to push forward, clear the wave if you are positive you will not get ganked as a result. If you want to roam, quickly clear the wave and run off immediately. Just be cautious about where you are standing when you clear waves. Using your abilities on the creeps leaves you vulnerable to an all-in when all your spells are down!

5) Stop! Don’t Move! Freeze the Lane!

Play Lissandra and ult people to freeze them (just kidding). Freezing a lane is when the opponent’s creeps are pushing towards you but you do not let them move forward. You stand there at the bridge telling them they cannot pass, and they just hit you for a while as you wait for your own minions. Freezing lanes is an important skill for controlling your lane. Freezing allows you to deny your opponent creep kills, and also forces your opponent overextend to farm and get experience.

6) Wave “trimming”

Sometimes waves get way too large to freeze and the damage you would take tanking the minions will be too much. When this happens, ‘trim’ the wave down by killing most or all minions that are not at full health. If there are still too many, then just kill minions until there are about 4-5 left and let them hit you to freeze the lane without taking too much damage.

7) Proxying

Proxying is when you farm behind the enemy turret. This will force your opponent into a state where his tower will constantly be pushed and he has to decide whether he kills you or the minions. This is a really good technique for keeping your opponent in your lane, and also for attracting attention from the enemy jungler who will (most likely) gank you.

8) To Hit or to Get Hit, It’s Quite the Question

Sometimes you will have one or two more minions than your enemy, causing your wave to push forward even if you do not want it to. In these situations, one of the things you can do is to get hit by enemy auto attacks. This will cause your minions to stop hitting enemy minions, allowing the enemy wave to start pushing towards you! Sometimes your pain is a necessary sacrifice for your safety, especially in a 1v2 lane.

Note that this works both ways. If your opponent’s creeps are pushing towards you, auto-attacking your opponent will result in your creeps pushing toward your opponent. Keep this in mind if you want to freeze the lane!
