Star Citizen Crosses $25 Million Mark From Crowd Funding

Gamers have officially helped raise $25 million dollars for the upcoming PC title, Star Citizen.

A little over a year ago, a game titled Star Citizen was placed on Kickstarter to help fund the game’s creation.  The Kickstarter campaign was wildly successful as the game received over $2 million in support; which was 426 percent of what the company needed for funding!

However, a year later the game continues to receive funding from gamers who are excited for the game’s release.  So much so that the $2 million has officially grown to over $25 million in donations.  $25 million is around the amount that the average ‘AAA title’ costs to develop so this is a significant milestone for a previous Kickstarter project.

To give some perspective, Beyond: Two Souls by Quantic Dream cost around $27 million to develop.  Although, this amount does only includes development costs – so any money spent for marketing purposes does not count towards that sum.

“Even though we’ve fully funded the base game, every extra dollar helps to make the experience better,” said Chris Roberts, founder of Roberts Space Industries.

“The content we talk about in these stretch goals isn’t ‘feature creep’; it’s elements we’ve been building and planning that will be all that more impressive with additional resources.”

Roberts had said previously that Star Citizen could “compete with any AAA game out there,” and with the additional funding Roberts Space Industries might be able to do just that.

What do you think about Star Citizen and its recent landmark of $25 million in funding?  Do you believe the game will live up to the expectations that gamers are placing on it by this level of crowd funding?  Let me know what you think in the Comments below!
