Experience Virtual Reality on Your Smartphone with Oculus Rift

VR on your smartphone! Should we cheer or clap in confusion?

We’ve all heard what the Oculus Rift is and what it’s capable of, but if you haven’t check out this video to give you a taste of the future. 3D technology and virtual reality is becoming more and more popular in movies and games, and now CEO Brendan Iribe is talking about reaching out to smartphone companies to extend the virtual reality experience.

The Oculus Rift has been tested with the Kinect and Move, but they’re primarily interested in incorporating the technology with smartphones. While the Oculus Rift is coming out for PC in 2014, and even for smartphones later on, you may be wondering why the developers don’t target the consoles like the Xbox One and PS4. Well, smartphones are developing and improving everyday – much faster than the consoles – and this will make incorporating and testing out the technology on them easier and the tech will be out to the public faster, before the developers tackle the big guys. Before the VR technology is ready for consoles, developers have to fix some major issues like removing motion blur.

Iribe says,

“There’s a lot of improvements that can be made on the hardware side for VR that no-one’s doing yet because it’s a new thing. The mobile rate of innovation is going to be able to make a lot of those improvements.”

With the rate that smartphones are improving, it comes as no surprise that they would be the perfect starting point (after PC) to introduce the public to life in virtual reality. There is still no public release date for the headset, but the developer kits are available for $300 now.
