Hello, GameSkinny writers, and those simply interested in the use of search engine optimization (SEO) when writing on video games. I want everyone to get out there and get some exposure, which means delving a bit into SEO to maximize your traffic potential on individual articles/pieces of content.
I’ve written a few articles on the subject, which I’ll be linking below, and once that series is complete I am looking to get a little hands-on with some writers’ work to help them with on the spot critiques and examples on where to go. That will not be for at least another month.
So before I get started on pumping you up for your exciting journey into search engine optimization, let me introduce myself a bit first and explain why you can trust my advice (for the most part, I won’t say always).
Who am I?
I was hired at GameSkinny because of my writing style (which I still don’t understand), my profound love of games, and my knowledge of search engine optimization. Prior to working here on the site, I had almost 5 years of working SEO experience under a number of clients.
I was professionally trained by some very talented experts in the field, but I would by lying if I said I haven’t learned a great deal while working here. That said, the things I’ve learned while here have been self-taught on trial and error and a great wealth of self-confidence in my abilities.
As it stands, I am the biggest writer on the site — but I really want someone to take that away from me. I want someone, anyone, and everyone to surpass me in traffic. The cumulative efforts of many can (if done right) far surpass the efforts of one.
This is where you come in.
As a writer, you want to convey your message to other people, whatever that message may be. You could be writing a news piece, an editorial, or a guide — it doesn’t matter, you want people to see what you have to say. I, too, want people to see your message.
It’s important that you not get discouraged if you’re having a tough time catching on with the audience you’re looking for. Getting that attention isn’t something that will happen overnight, and it’s something that can take months. You can’t let this discourage you from pushing on, because there are more facets to publishing on the internet than simply putting your content up and letting it float into the Google-abyss.
The reality is that writing for success is a complicated affair, but anyone with a keen eye and a will to succeed can do it. Provided that individual can write, anyway.
I don’t know who you are, and I don’t care. I believe in you and your abilities.
I believe in your ability to bring in the audience you want, but knowing how to do that is tricky. Knowing exactly how to do that over the long-term is, in itself, a piece of knowledge one can only truly obtain once they have finally done it. I can say this now, as someone sitting firmly in that boat who is unwilling to leave.
With the right knowledge in your hands and proper feedback, you can get the audience you want. With the right techniques, you can hold that audience. These are the things I want to teach people, especially here on GameSkinny because of my personal investment.
Anyone can do it if they know what to do, and with any luck I’m going to teach you how to do it.
Now, here’s the tough part of learning anything from me:
I ramble, and sometimes get way too into certain facets of optimization.
Search engine optimization is a part of my career that I am passionate about. I’m more passionate about games, sure, but proper utilization of SEO is something I can really just go on and on about. And I assure you I do in my optimization guides, and will continue to do so in future ones and in the direct feedback phase.
If you can get past the fact that I’m a rambler and that I use a casual style when writing these guides, I promise you will learn something useful. If you can’t, well, that’s your problem.
So anyway, let’s move on to the links. As I write more of these guides (I try to do one once a week), they will be listed here. General questions not directly related to guide topics can be asked here, though I would prefer they be kept on the topic of SEO or writing.
