League of Legends has recently been hacked and the account information of some of the most popular online games in the U.S. has been exposed. In their blog on Tuesday, Riot Games say they are updating their security system and they suggest users create stronger passwords.
What happened?
Riot Games said:
“What we know: usernames, email addresses, salted password hashes, and some first and last names were accessed. This means that the password files are unreadable, but players with easily guessable passwords are vulnerable to account theft.”
Along with access to username, passwords, and e-mail addresses, credit card information may have been accessed as well. There is still no confirmed knowledge whether credit card information has been accessed, so to be safe Riot Games suggests users change their passwords immediately within the 24 hours of the hack.
What will Riot games do?
This isn’t the first time the League of Legends has been hacked. In June 2012, a few users account information was exposed by Lulzsec hacking group. Now that it has occurred again, Riot games is creating two new security features:
1. Email verification: all registrations and account changes will require a valid e-mail verification.
2. A two-factor authentication: changes to account information will require an e-mail or mobile verification.
These features are currently in development and no final date has been set, as of yet.
