Blizzard Crushes NYC Taxi with a Giant Axe to Celebrate Release of Warlords of Draenor

Blizzard buries a giant replica of a legendary axe into a taxi cab in the middle of Times Square in anticipation of the release of its new WoW expansion, Warlords of Draenor.

New Yorkers got a taste of the brutality of the Iron Horde this week, as Blizzard took to Times Square to eviscerate a New York taxi with a giant orcish axe.

The publicity stunt features Gorehowl, the legendary weapon of Garrosh Hellscream, one of the title characters in Blizzard’s upcoming World of Warcraft expansion, Warlords of Draenor.

The axe is easily longer than the cab itself, and cuts through the roof of the taxi. The back window is blown out and its top light sits mangled on the ground next to it. Yellow police tape cordons off the area around the taxi, with the hashtag “#warlords” featuring on the tape, as well as the expansion’s website, “Warlords.com”.

Take a look at the photos below for more takes on the carnage.

With WoW subscription levels hovering around a historically low 6.8 million, Blizzard is looking to bump up the number of active players with this new expansion. The company clearly doesn’t mind spending a bit of cash to hype up the new release.

Blizzard will release World of Warcraft: Warlords of Draenor worldwide at midnight on Thursday November 13th, 2014.
