Games For Windows Live Shuts Down

Games for Windows Live down! Yay or Nay?

Games for Windows Live will shut down on July 1, 2014.  The news of this date has come from the Ages of Empires Online support page that states:

Games for Windows Live will be discontinued on July 1, 2014. Although it is available through Steam, Age of Empires Online requires features of the Games for Windows Live service. You can continue to enjoy all the features of Age of Empires Online as the service will remain 100% operational until July 1, 2014 when the server will shut down.

There is only news of a few games (eg., Bioshock 2, Batman:Arkham City) that will be migrating to Steam, while there are no announcements yet about  what will happen to the rest.

What won't be available?

  • Any game that has not had DRM (Digital Right Management) removed.
  • Any game that has not been updated with a current system because it will have features that cannot be accessible by anyone anymore.
  • Single player games requiring login authentication to GFWL server.
  • Multiplayer games requiring login authentication to GFWL server.

There are several different reviews regarding GFWL shutting down. A few say it is a good thing and others say it is a bad thing they are shutting down. What are your thoughts and why?

Great article Alexa! GFWL sucked ass anyway.

GFWL is a freakin nightmare. I didn't mind it so much on the first few games I had to use it for. But the more and more I had to use it, the more I noticed what a piece of trash it is.

That said, it will really suck to lose access to single player games that need the stupid thing.
I've been trying to play Dead Rising 2 and can't get past the whole crash on startup problem even though I've followed every single solution I can find online.
I won't be able to play it at all if I ever do get the damn thing to work once the trash GFWL gets shut down. =p

GFWL is worse than Origin. Literally. That's saying a lot. Try playing Dark Souls (and creating/logging in to a GFWL account) and let me know how long it takes you to rage quit.

I gave up after about a week of trying to get the damned software to work, I've literally played the game once for about 5 hours straight since I was unable to save. Can't say I'm sorry it's going, but I'm still infuriated at the fact I can't actually play the game I paid for...

    I haven't encountered a single issue with Origin. =p

really? You're one of the lucky few. Most people I know that have played battlefield 3 (basically the only reason to have origin) have had to reformat their machines cuz origin and their tech support sucks.
