Why is Titanfall Only on Xbox? Because Xbox 360 Dominated the US

We all know Titanfall isn't coming to the PlayStation platform. But why?

How does a third-party game end up being exclusive to one platform? Oh, there’s always an interesting story behind that.

As we all know, Titanfall is only coming to the Xbox 360, Xbox One and PC; it will not be released for any PlayStation platform (despite rumors that it will eventually land on the PS4). So, why did developer Respawn Entertainment go with the Xbox brand? Well, according to NeoGAF user famousmortimer, there’s a pretty logical explanation:

“Respawn wanted to focus on a single console as they were a small team. In 2011 and 2012 Microsoft was behind the scenes selling their vision for the Xbox One. At the same time Sony was gathering info but not really sharing it. The vast majority of the industry thought that Microsoft was going to dominate this gen… until one year ago, tomorrow.

Respawn picked the XB1 because it seemed like the better choice. MS was pushing it. Sony was mum. The 360 dominated the US and western EU, which is where FPS are king. It was a no-brainer.”

That makes perfect sense to me. Additionally, famousmortimer claims to have spoken to a trusted EA contact, and there won’t be any “giant monsters or aliens” to fight. Many thought we’d see that, as they pop up in the Titanfall art book, but it just ain’t true:

“Talked to a contact at EA I trust explicitly. The monsters are in the skybox. There’s one MP-story based fight with a non-human that could hardly be called a ‘giant monster’.”

Titanfall is slated to arrive on March 11 in North America and three days later in Europe. The question is whether or not this new franchise – and it probably will become a series – will eventually come to PlayStation 4. It’s more than likely; we saw something similar happen last generation with BioWare’s Mass Effect franchise. Chances are, this is only timed exclusivity and soon, EA will want to bring Titanfall to as many gamers as possible.
