Director Tetsuya Nomura Gives Us More Kingdom Hearts 3

Nomura lets us in on some developments on our favorite key-blade-wielding hero.

Since E3, everyone has been dying for more information on Kingdom Hearts 3. The trailer left us wanting more, and director Tetsuya Nomura has given us that in this weeks’ issue of Famitsu magazine.

KH3 is beginning where Dream Drop Distance left off. As of right now, the developers are deciding which worlds they want to include in the game. Nomura confirmed that this will be the end of the tale in relation to where Kingdom Hearts began. Kingdom Hearts 3 will be the final episode in the Dark Seeker Saga, and the epic battle against Xehanort. As you get to this epic battle, the gameplay is said to be even more frantic than before.

“The really bold action we’ve always had is getting even crazier,” said Nomura.

KH3 has three-person parties, but NPCs and other characters join the fight in each individual world, and the resulting action is really flashy and exciting. The enemy AI is a lot more intricate, too, and I think the gameplay will reflect that new dynamic balance. For example, there’s a foe that’s shaped like a vehicle, and Sora may jump on it and fly around; that’s already implemented.”

I have always loved the Kingdom Hearts fighting style, and now to find out it’s going to be even crazier really excites me. We get a taste of it in the teaser, when Sora is being chased by a swarm of Heartless.

Nomura also said that after a lot of tests, Kingdom Hearts 3 will feature a graphic style called Kingdom Shader after realizing that the game should return back to its roots. “Along the way, we remembered that these KH characters were originally paintbrush art from Disney productions, a texture that was one of our original aims, and that it was time to return to that,” said Nomura. “It may look like a pretty drastic change, but I see it as a rich evolution of everything we’ve shown you up to now.”

We are set to see more this upcoming fall. Nomura has said that KH3 will be featured at either at the Tokyo Game Show, the Disney-oriented D23 Expo Japan, or both. Even though the game is still in early development, Nomura is certain that we will see more very soon.

“Even though KH3 is still pretty early in development, it’s already producing some great scenes in Square Enix’s internal conferences… We’re discussing new developments never seen in any KH before, so keep an eye on further updates.”

Kingdom Hearts 3 will be available to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One and is available for pre-order on amazon now.
