Megaman 3: The Superior Megaman

GameSkinny reader Dallas tells us why Mega Man 3 is the best in the series.

This week, I sat down and asked my good friend Dallas, what his favorite video game was. Although he loves his FIFA, fighting games, and occasionally even Borderlands 2, he went old school on me and said Mega Man 3.

Not a shabby choice, and a definite classic in the series. You could argue that others are more superior, but he was adamant in his defenses. His passion even got me itching to play again.

What sticks out most about this game to you?

“While most would say that Megaman 2’s soundtrack is the most iconic, for me, Mega Man 3 is the best. It is the most hyped, and always gets me excited. The intro song will always be my favorite for any game.”

What makes this game superior to others in the franchise?

“Gameplay wise, this game was a big turning point in the Mega Man series. For the first time you were able to slide under enemies and obstacles, allowing for more interesting battles with robot masters and the basic enemies in the game.”

In what ways exactly?

“It adds a whole new dimension to movement and planning your attacks. It’s also the first time you get rush who was an improvement on items 1, 2, and 3 in Mega Man 2. Rush was a more interesting way of integrating the items into the game. The battles against the robot masters are more interesting because there isn’t necessarily a good order to fight them in.”

So what was the most definitive way Megaman 3 was superior to previous entries?

“There are a few robot masters who exist in their own “weakness tree.” It was a bit jarring to suddenly realize that the robot masters I was fighting were not weak to anything I had in my arsenal. It made me get creative. Plus there is Protoman, end of conversation.”

So what makes this game your favorite above anything else?

Mega Man 3 has one of the most tight control schemes of the series, until Mega Man X, and that is always appreciated in a game, especially one that hinges so wholly on your personal skills and pattern recognition. The visuals are classic Megaman. Just a derpy looking robot dude who can jump and shoot (aka super nostalgic for me).”

So in conclusion:

This was a kick-ass game that game blew all previous Mega Man games out of the water. For Dallas, it gives him fond feelings of nostalgia, but also the fact that it managed to improve with simple yet dynamic changes in gameplay.

Good choice, Dallas. I approve
