Nintendo’s President Offer a “Meh” to Xbox One and PS4 Launch Lineups.

Reggie Fils-Aime seems none too impressed with the launch lineup for his competitors, despite the pitiful launch of the Wii U last Fall.

With the next generation of consoles looming, the time to talk about launch titles is well at hand. Both Sony and Microsoft have pretty hefty lists of launch titles. Xbox’s is a bit heftier on the quantity side, but Sony has several titles that are free, either outright or for Playstation Plus subscribers. It’s definitely the strongest looking set of console launches we’ve seen in a few generations.

However, not everyone is impressed, and possibly the biggest name among the detractors has become Nintendo’s President, Reggie Fils-Aime. Speaking with IGN, he had the following to say:

“It’s all about the games. The competitive systems have announced their launch lineups. I’m allowed to say ‘Meh,’” Fils-Aime said. “I look at our lineup of titles and I feel good about our lineup. We’ve got Zelda. We’ve got Mario. We’ve got Donkey Kong. In addition to great titles like Pikmin 3 and Wonderful 101, I feel very good about our lineup, and I feel very good about the value proposition we’re putting out there for the consumer.”

Of course, Fils-Aime does have a console he has to defend. The Wii U’s pitiful launch offering led to poor launch sales, and very little has released for the stagnating system since to bring up consumer confidence in it. Nintendo recently announced a $50 price drop for the Wii U, but are upcoming titles like Pikmin 3 and the Legend of Zelda: the Wind Waker HD remake enough to compete with two fresh new systems and launch titles like Killzone: Shadow Fall and Dead Rising 3Only time will tell.

When asked about the new technologies offered by his competitors systems, such as cloud based gaming and the Cross-Play feature between the Vita and PS4, Fils-Aime was quick to redirect the question.  He said that he didn’t wish to talk about technology, and that Nintendo is focused on the fun of the experience, and that it was the games that were important.

The above is an interesting statement, considering new technological advancement is what helped boost Nintendo’s sales with the Wii and made it the overall best-selling console of the current generation. It seems Fils-Aime is playing the defensive end.The Wii U does have some good games on the horizon, but none of them are the system sellers that Nintendo is well-known for. It’s hard to say if any of Nintendo’s fall games will help them to top Sony and Microsoft’s launch offerings. Only time will tell.
