A 15th Century Chapel Adorned by Gremlin Gargoyles

A 15th century French chapel adorns some interesting gargoyles, like Gizmo, Goldorak and a xenomorph.

The Chapelle de Bethléem (Saint-Jean-de-Boiseau) was almost in complete ruin by the 1990s. The chapel needed a serious facelift. What the Gothic beauty got was all sorts of nerdy.

Jean-Louis Boisel, the carver assigned to replace the gargoyles, decided to use geeky pop culture references instead of the traditional route. His statues feature Gizmo and other gremlins, Goldorak and, my favorite, a xenomorph from the Alien franchise. These figures are meant to serve with the symbolic nature of gargoyles in mind.

Of course not everyone thought Boisel was being clever. The project was thought to be very bizarre by the villagers. Once the youth of the town noticed that there was a xenomorph onto of the beloved chapel that the project was finally accepted.

The statues can still be seen today at the lovely French chapel. I don't see any demonic spirits messing with it any time soon. Just look how cute Gizmo is!
