Warhammer Age of Reckoning: Revisited

Disappointment after revisiting a fun old casual MMO.

So I’ve been playing MMOs for 7 years now, I know I got on the bandwagon a bit late. I started a Warhammer 40k article series earlier today and while looking for something to pass the time while uploading the images I needed I found my old Age of Reckoning discs. I never really got into it the first time I played it.

Even though I paid the subscription for like two years, I really only played that first month.

This game was the second MMO I ever played, WoW was third due to a technicality, I played for 5 minutes and quit. I decided on a whim to see if the servers were still running, after about an hour of downloading from the disc I realized I couldn’t remember my old login. The login screen took me to a place that didn’t exist anymore so I had to go through Google to find it. Another 25 minutes later I had created a new trial account and started the 4 hour client patch.

Already failing me.

By this time, my images were already uploaded so I had failed to achieve the initial goal already. Not a big catastrophe since the website said the game is free to play now. Patches all finished, I log into the game and find out trial accounts only get 2 servers to choose from. On top of that, the game will only let you reach level 10 as a trial member. But wait, there’s more! There is practically no useable content for trial members, you can’t ride mounts, use auction houses, or anything. At this point I’m a little annoyed, because even on my old account I had a mount by the time I was level 10.

I should have just trusted my gut.

I decided to play anyways, against my better judgement. I chose the European server for my first character since it was past midnight on the east coat. I figured if there are any European players this would be a good time to play with them. My starting class was a Witch Elf, from the Dark Elves. A bit redundant, but whatever. Sometime between the time I quit and now apparently they changed Dark Elves to start where the Chaos start, which makes absolutely no sense, considering there is a Dark Elf starting zone already made. I got to level 5 before I decided, I just couldn’t go any further. Although I never got into the game the first time, I had thought it was a fun casual game, but now, it’s just totally not worth the effort. I don’t even want to list this as a review because I’m so disappointed.
