The story of War Z would be a truly hilarious one if it wasn’t horrifyingly true. The game launched on Steam with false advertising sufficient to suffer reasonable accusations of fraud, then their Executive Producer offered an interview that made him and his company look more like words-lawyering crooks than they had before, then Hammerpoint Interactive’s forum moderators got negative press by deleting any posts that spoke negatively about the game and banning the accounts of the people posting them. With that as a set up, it seemed inevitable that there would be backlash against the game and the company behind it. So we hoped, at any rate.
A good start
We’ve gotten our first hint of a hopeful response today. As of this writing, The War Z is no longer available for purchase on Steam. It is still listed as being a part of the service, but it is no longer possible to purchase it in the store, the game no longer being on the front page or even in their top sellers column anymore, requiring a dedicated search to find the game’s page and even that no longer having an option to purchase the game. According to a release from Valve to Kotaku the removal is only temporary while Valve negotiates with Hammerpoint about a “new build” for the game.
Valve has also stated that if you bought the game and would like a refund, you can contact them by submitting a Steam support ticket to receive such.
