Costume Quest is My Favorite Double Fine Game

Trick or treating? Candy gathering? Role-Play and Costumes? Not just for Halloween anymore.

Double Fine, the studio behind Psychonauts and Brutal Legend, have no shortage of fantastic, inventive games. But the one that has always stood out to me is Costume Quest.

Costume Quest is an RPG, adventure video game, focusing on the lives of fraternal twins Reynold and Wren. In the beginning of the game, you must decide which twin you want to play as you go out trick-or-treating among the houses of the neighborhood.

Whichever character you choose not to play is stuck in a candy-corn outfit and promptly kidnapped by a huge monster. You must then do battle against the monsters (known in the game as Grubbins) as well as other neighborhood children to return your kidnapped twin and get home before curfew.

What makes Costume Quest really inventive and fun are the fight sequences. I’m not a huge fan of turn-based combat, but Costume Quest is the exception to the rule. Outside of combat, you are a small kid in a cheaply made costume, but when you begin battles, you transform into an awesome large-scale version of your costume. Become a huge knight, the Statue of Liberty, or a robot that would make Optimus Prime jealous.

The game is all about the power of imagination, and the ultimate lure of Halloween candy. If you’re looking for your Halloween fix, there is no better place to look than Costume Quest.
