What's the best video-game story you've ever played?

posted by (Correspondent) 8 years ago

I'm just a complete sucker for a good narrative in games. That's probably why I love games like Call of Duty so much...

if Call of Duty was about a post apocalyptic world where you're tasked with protecting the only girl who's immune to the virus that nearly wiped out humanity.

So yeah, my favorite gaming story is Last of Us. Other notables would include Tomb Raider and Bioshock Infinite.

What's yours?

In terms of straight story I loved the original Bioshock. Hearing those audio diaries play as you discover the remnants of the once great city of Rapture totally engulfed me. Mass Effect, Final Fantasy VII, and TellTale's The Walking Dead are definitely up there as well

I like any story made my TellTale (The Walking Dead, The Wolf Among Us, Tales from the Borderlands, etc.). I also really liked Mass Effect.

    Last Story
    Tales of Symphonia 1&2
    Infinite Undiscovery

Those are just off the top of my head, but they had some of the best stories I have seen in games. True they are not my all time favorites, but they are pretty far up the list. It felt more like an amazing experience instead of playing a game when I was beating these games. Their stories sucked me in and caused me to keep wanting to play to see what happens next.

I really liked both of the KOTOR games. I think they had great storylines and even though I know it's not gonna happen I would love to see a KOTOR 3. SWTOR didn't count as part of the series for me.

Infinite Undiscovery, while not my favorite all time game, it is my favorite story. Really hope it gets the backwards compatibility thumbs up for Xbone.

    Resident Evil 3. Nemesis
    Perfect Dark

The first Metal Gear Solid on PS1. That game opened up a whole genre of action-adventure stealth spy games to me.

I enjoy subtext in video games so I feel like the developers are not holding my hand. For that reason, I consider Journey to be a perfect story as well as a perfect game. It is what you want it to be and everyone has a different interaction with the story being told depending on your interactions with the world as well as other players. This also applies to the Souls series. If you invest and dedicate yourself to learning about the world, you will find something new that wasn't shoved in your face by the developers. "Press F to pay respects" is not how a story should be told.

Journey's story is incredibly philosophical and extremely bounded in eastern thought and tradition that I think its impact is lost on a lot of people. I know it was on me when I first played it.

i appreciate how over the top devil may cry's story is, but i would have to say for me personally it a tie between Thomas was alone, the unfinished swan, and the last of us.

Knights of The Old Republic had a pretty good story

Both Baldur's Gates were the best for me though! If I had to choose I would pick Baldur's Gate 2

    Great question!

There are so many story lines that I love. Metal Gear has so much lore involved and Tomb Raider will always be one of my favorites. The Last of Us and Mass Effect though, by far my favorite story lines!

Also, I'm a huge CoD-multi player! Add me if you'd like:

Bastion. It wasn't necessarily the story, just the entire experience. I don't know if any other game has made me feel like that before. It's hard to explain.

The video game story that was the most moving to me was The Vanishing of Ethan Carter. I think Bioshock and Bioshock infinite have some of the best stories all around.

I have to agree. Last of Us has the best story. It's a clean, well-told story from start to finish.

I almost cry with ending scene of The Walking Dead season 1.

Half Life for me. The story plays out across 3 games (different protagonists but the same setting at the same time) and the world slowly becomes clear as you progress through the game. Some questions remain unanswered which is annoying and fascinating and one of the reasons it is still my favourite after all these years.
