Dragon Age Sex Scenes Will Be "Mature" "Tasteful" and "Incredibly Expensive"

New Dragon Age sex scenes inspired by Mass Effect.

Jonathan Perry, cinematic director for the Dragon Age Franchise, says that the sex scenes in BioWare's upcoming next-generation role playing game Dragon Age: Inquisition will be "mature and tasteful."

Apparently the maturity and tastefulness of the sex scenes are inspired by the sex scenes in Mass Effect. Perry says that he thinks the sex scenes in Mass Effect are very well done, so he wants to take it in that same direction for Inquisition.

He indicates that while the game might have a nude character, they will be framed differently so that part of the character will be in shadow or there will be several stages to the characters undressing.

Making the Scenes Realistic

Perry says,

"We also want to focus not just on the sex itself, but also that this is the culmination of spending a lot of time with a character and getting to know them, and so we’re giving scenes a mature and tasteful treatment I guess."

He adds that it's something they are currently working on, so they will soon see how it goes. He explains that video games will soon be able to depict intimacy as movies do; however, they will be different given the interactive nature games have to offer.

All in all, creating realistic sex scenes in games is

"incredibly expensive in terms of animation fidelity."

Dragon Age: Inquisition is due for release in fall 2014 for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3 and 4, and PC.

Personally, I don't enjoy sex scenes in games at all. So, although Perry says that the scenes in Dragon Age will be "mature and tasteful" and more focused on realistic intimacy, I couldn't care less to be honest. I'd rather a game not have the scenes at all and that is my own opinion. Heck, I don't even enjoy sex scenes in movies!

Anyway, I've never played Mass Effect, how would you describe the sex scenes? Do you think Perry chose a good game to receive inspiration from for the sex scenes in Dragon Age: Inquisition

If they're done well then no problem, we're used to them in films so a cut scene would be in this format albeit animated. Think there should be an option to skip them within game options as obviously not to everyone's tastes, so there it could do the ubiquitous fade to black and that part of the audience is kept happy.

The argument would be very different if it was incorporated into gameplay...

Interesting. I didn't even think about it as having it as an option. I usually like thinking of things like that, but clearly I wasn't in my head, hahaha. I agree with you though about having it as an option...that way its a win-win for everyone.

This news worries me a bit. I loved the hell out of Dragon Age: Origins. It had some wacky/funny sex scenes and, sure, if you're into them, you might want them to not look hilarious when your characters clip against each other and look super unrealistic.

That being said, I'd much rather them spend this time fleshing out dungeons or giving me more land to cover or something substantial. The majority of players (I could only assume) will probably watch the sex cinematic for their favorite character once or twice, maybe once for everyone, and then that will be it. Why do they need to focus on it so much that they actually make a press release about it?

I do enjoy having friendships and relationships with characters in RPGs as it adds a little bit of extra depth to it, but I'd rather them just have a fade-to-black sex scene or even forego it all together and spend the time making a time machine to undo Dragon Age 2. Now that'd be super sexy.

    I completely agree.

    You betcha. :)
Felt very engaging and that topic is quite popular. I did a piece about negativity in gaming. When doing the research sex and violence were the top searches (how sad).

Hopefully you'll get some good hits and discussion about it. :) [HIGH FIVE!]

I don't care for sex scenes either. Now ask me when I was 15 and that would've been a selling point. But even in movies I find it usually carries little weight for the story. Aside from showing the connection. Maybe something to allude to it? I personally don't find anything wrong to show off the human body despite American culture. I just don't need or want a sex scene.

And mass effect (which I love that series. Wish they kept the original ending) had more tasteful cutscenes that showed the naked bodies (not much showing)but then the camera would pan up.

Now the Witcher... those games dont hold anything back.

    Great read too.
