Nintendo Dips Into The Free-to-Play Pool With Steel Diver

I sunk your Battleship! Now please insert 25 cents to continue...

Nintendo has announced they are working on a new Steel Diver for Nintendo 3DS that will be free-to-play. The original Steel Divers was released in 2011, and in the game you control your very own submarine. Through a set of dial and lever controls, players have the ability to guide their little sub towards battle and ultimate victory. The interface is very reminiscent of Battleship, if you have ever played it as a child, except digital. The actual game-play features a little bit more than this, however, incorporating different modes that allow for side-scrolling type of mission levels.

Still in the works

The game’s actual release date is still hidden in the depths of Nintendo’s murky press quotes, and aside from an enigmatic “It’s something that we’re hoping to be able to show relatively soon,” from executive Shigeru Miyamoto to IGN, not much else is known on when we can expect to start blowing our friends out of the water.

Aye, you heard that right mateys. Bad pirate talk aside, Steel Diver does plan on featuring a emphasis on a multiplayer mode that will include “…this four-player battle mode that…is going to be very interesting…”. Oh, Miyamoto. You crafty old seabird you. Teasing us with only enough information to catch our interest.

Free-to-Play vs. Subs

The only thing that remains before you go out and commemorate your new sea life with an anchor tattoo, is the looming question on what free-to-play really means for the game (as is the question for any F2P). Will the game still be enjoyable despite the possibility of micro-transactions? Or is this just the wave of the future we must all come to accept? Post your thoughts in the comments below.

I'm a 29 year old Jersey girl who loves games. I currently work full time, volunteer part time at this awesome non-profit called Amman Imman, and go to school part time. I also train in jiu jitsu. So time isn't quite on my side (unlike that song says). I have been trying unsuccessfully for years to clone myself so I can devote one of me to boring stuff like working and laundry - thus allowing more time for gaming. I'm willing to offer large sums of imaginary money to any who can make this happen.
