Final Fantasy VII Not Coming to Mobile “Any Time Soon”

Final Fantasy VII re-release on mobile devices at least a "few years away."

A week ago, developer Square Enix announced the release of Final Fantasy VI on iOS and Android in the US this coming winter. However, those hoping for a release of Final Fantasy VII on mobile in the near future are going to have to wait.

Takashi Tokita, Square Enix’s producer, has said hinted that Final Fantasy VII will be coming in the future, but that it won’t be for awhile.

Unfortunately, it’s not that it’s impossible for us to develop Final Fantasy 7 for mobile, it’s that currently space will be an issue. Phones won’t be able to contain the space it takes. It’s over a gigabyte. People are probably going to have to wait a few years.

Final Fantasy VII‘s original release was a three CD-ROM affair, and the recent PC re-release took up a whopping 3GB. While the app store allows over a gigabyte of material to be downloadable, 3 gigs is way over the 2GB limit Apple imposes on IOS games.

Either way, Final Fantasy VI is still on for a mobile launch this winter, so Final Fantasy fans have something to look forward to.
