Mad Max, World of Tanks, and the Apocalypse: How they Influenced MotorGun

"We're more like Mad Max than The Road."

Indie game developers, Maxx Kaufman and Mike Arkin, have united as the co-founders of Pixelbionic.

Kaufman and Arkin, with a team of developers, are currently working with a team to create a new car combat game called MotorGun. Gameplay is simple. Just pick a car, customize it, and then be ready for battle.

But where did the idea start?

For Kaufman he said he spent a lot of time “playing the shit out of” World of Tanks – an MMO where players fight one another using historically accurate tanks.  He then thought about removing the historical aspect and changing the tanks to cars.

For Arkin the idea was something he always had in his head. From childhood he would smash toy cars together. This evolved into imaging what would happen if his car had a cannon on the hood while driving on the freeway.

According to Arkin,

“We didn’t need to be inspired — it’s just a normal thing to me that cars should be driving around shooting at each other.”

But what’s the game about?

MotorGun takes place in a desolate, post-apocalyptic world. While that may sound bleak, Arkin states that in action movies there’s always humor in dark settings.

“We’re more like Mad Max than The Road.

In this world, the only thing that remains is three warring factions. Each is trying to gain control of the remaining resources and travels in gangs – making MotorGun team based. There will be several different vehicle classes and players can coordinate with each other to create the best team. Kaufman stated that the title will allow players their individuality within the team. This can come from customizations. These range from color, logo, body armor, fender flares, etc.

Each player has a driver and a crew. This plays into how well the car handles and how effectively it can use tech trees. When it comes time for repairs the player can rely on a mechanic for help.

Kaufman also stated that the world will be filled with awesome visuals. Such as, “a city with suspended bridges going through destroyed buildings, or a city buried in the snow where players need to race to control the top.” But the game is aiming for a good balance of quality and well-thought out elements.

MotorGun sounds like it will be a game with a personality.
