Unforgotten Realms: A Great Way to Pass the Time

If you enjoy geek culture and gaming references, you should totally check out Unforgotten Realms.

This weekend, I need a break from the stresses of college, so I’m marathoning Unforgotten Realms. I’ve been watching it for years now. In fact, when I first watched them, the new version of the series wasn’t even out. I watched the original version back on Newgrounds.

Unforgotten Realms is a webseries about two guys (Mike and Rob) who are playing a role playing game called, surprise, Unforgotten Realms. Mike is really into the game, and Rob is just his moronic friend who keeps messing everything up. Mike plays a Dwarf Wizard called Eluamous Nailo while Rob’s character is a Dwarf Sorcerer named Sir Schmoopy of Awesometon. Other characters include Petey (a rat), Jaques (a talking axe), Roamin (the crime solving, rank 11 Paladin), and Gaary (Roamin’s sidekick).

While Rob and Mike start off their story in search of a magical herb to save Schmoopy’s dying grandmother, they quickly get sidetracked by Kobolds, Nadar Gems, and Rob’s villainous younger brother, Timmy the Evil.

The show is chock full of humor, fourth wall breakage, and groan-worthy references. It’s perfect for geeks and gamers. Currently, there are 50 episodes, and the last one came out in 2011. However, Robert Moran, the creator of the show, has not given up on the series. Last year, he had a Kickstarter for an online game based on the show. It was successfully funded, so we should be looking forward to seeing that at some point.

Watching Unforgotten Realms is a great way to spend a few hours. It never fails to make me laugh, even if I have seen it so many times that I know it word-for-word. If you’re interested in watching it, I suggest starting out with the original series. You don’t need to see it to understand the show, but there are a couple of references here and there, especially in the first episode. Make sure to check it out!
