Nintendo Partners With GameStop For National Super Smash Bros. 3DS Tournament

Nintendo is partnering with GameStop to hold a national open tournament to find the best 3DS Super Smash Bros. player.

Nintendo is partnering with GameStop to host the first national Super Smash Bros. for 3DS tournament. If you’re excited to get the game and test your skill, this is your opportunity. There will be 16 GameStops across the nation hosting 64-player tournaments on October 4th, at 11 a.m.

Matches will consist of a 4 person free-for-all with only 1 victor in each match. These matches will be 6 minutes long, no stock (lives) count, and all items will be on. One lucky person from each tournament location will win a Nintendo 3DS, a copy of the new Super Smash Bros. and be flown out to New York City to battle other victors. The finals will then be streamed live from Nintendo World.

Will the Smash community jump on board?

It will be interesting to see how this tournament goes, as almost every rule about it goes against the standard competitive Smash rules.

While every tournament is different, most competitive Smash players play with 3 stock (lives), 8 minute matches, and have no items. On top of everything, it is never free-for-all. This, combined with items being on, could make this tournament be more of a chance of good luck, than skill, to progress in the tournament. It will be interesting if we will get to see high-profile players such as Mew2King or Hungrybox can make it to the main stage in New York.
