In the video above, lead developer for Still Alive Studios, Julian Mautner, demonstrates just how we’ve finally reached a new checkpoint in the achievable levels of immersion, interaction and play.
Somehow, the idea of a neural interface for gaming still feels like fiction. While the current state of the tech is relatively crude, time will allow the precision of these controls to beat out common motion control devices like the Wiimote. Though it’s hard to beat the capabilities and precision of a good old button, the way this tech will cut down problems like interface limitations and reaction times is so very exciting. The possibilities for the EPOC Emotiv, especially paired with other futuristic interfaces like the Oculus Rift, are truly endless.
Terraforming, spellcasting, telekinesis, this is all just the beginning of what’s possible with Son of Nor via the neural interface. As Julian points out in the video, the learning process in standard games involves pressing a new button, or old buttons in a new combination. Son of Nor‘s use of the EPOC Emotiv allows the player to learn different ways to cast spells and more, just with your brain. Just saying that sounds ridiculous, but it’s real, it’s true, it’s here.
Even without the neural interface, Son of Nor is shaping up to be a beautiful fantasy experience, with full spell customization and co-op play, and loads of exciting content brimming from the original world of Noshrac.
Son of Nor is slated for release in Q2 2014 for PC, Mac and Linux.
