Sony Online Entertainment Confirms Major Change to Planetside 2

Planetside 2 is getting a major update says Creative Director Matt Higby.

Big changes are coming to the acclaimed game Planetside 2. It has just been announced that game update 13 will be released July 24th and with it will come some major improvements. From major bug fixes to new gameplay content, Planetside 2 is getting an overhaul. However, the biggest change coming with this update has the potential to fundamentally change the way the game is played. That change is called the Esamir Lattice System.

According to a statement by Planetside 2 Creative Director Matt Higby, the lattice system of capturing territories, which has been previously available on only one of the game’s three continents, Indar, will now be available on Esamir as well, with Amerish getting the same system sometime shortly in the future.

What is the lattice system? Simply put, it is a system in which the game’s bases are linked together, meaning that if you want to capture a base, you have to capture the supporting facility first. Here is a picture of the current hex capture system on Esamir in which any base can be captured as long as two hexes are touching.

And here is what the lattice system will look like.

The lattice system will streamline the 1000 vs. 1000 player battles that are a staple in the Planetside franchise and provide even tougher and more rewarding fights.

With this update, the bases on Esamir have also had major changes. Higby said,

“The icy expanse known as Esamir has had a major facelift with virtually every facility and outpost modified and enhanced, with some being completely replaced. The goal with these changes is to enhance gameplay flow and help support the addition of the lattice connections on the continent.”

This update is a major one, giving current players something new to look forward to while waiting on the promised new continent Hossin. It is also the first of many steps Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) hopes to take before the game is launched on the PlayStation 4 shortly after its release this holiday season.  This move shows that SOE is committed to continue to support the PC release of Planetside 2 while working on the console version.
