For most mobile games, narrative is not a large focal point. Many are predominantly ludologically oriented experiences, emphasizing game systems over context and content and it makes sense. Mobile games are made to be experienced on the go. Whether you are waiting to catch a bus on your way to work, or briefly distracting yourself from said work, these games are built to make you feel accomplished in a much smaller timeframe than traditional console or PC games do.

The upcoming pirate adventure game, Booty Hunters won't be looking to shake that foundation, but it will be trying to incorporate narrative into the mobile experience in a way that is smooth and concise while maintaining the flow of the game.

In Booty Hunters, you are a fledgling pirate captain looking to make your name (in)famous on the high seas. After pulling off one of the more creative mutinies this side of the Atlantic against your former Captain, you claim his vessel as your own and set off in search of glory, gold and the mythical Fountain of Youth. To get to the Fountain of Youth, you must travel to the four corners of the world and undertake a Trial to prove your worth.

The overarching story isn't the only thing you'll be dealing with in Booty Hunters. As you travel the world and make port, you will hear rumors of buried treasure or new vessel types and can undertake a variety of different jobs to earn more coin. All of these things are woven seamlessly into the game's UI and are revealed through dynamic spoken dialog from an NPC. So for instance, you go to resupply your rum stock, the vendor will become a bit chatty and offer you up some details you might not get anywhere else.

In Booty Hunters, you will fight to survive and thrive across a dangerous and unforgiving ocean filled with greedy enemies looking to take what you've got. Are you skilled enough to weather the storm and find the Fountain of Youth?

Indie Developer Volite Games has published the first official gameplay video for their debut game, Booty Hunters, showcasing a select number of core abilities that players can expect to use on their adventures. You can check out the video below.

The abilities that are revealed in the video are as follows:

Hellfire: Hellfire fires a quick barrage of cannons in a cone shape, covering a wide area. This is very useful for damaging multiple ships and is a go-to ability for its high damage output.

Firing Line: Your ship squares up and fires a carefully timed volley of cannon fire in a straight line.  The area effect is relatively narrow, so this is one of the first abilities that will be available to the player.

Flame Cannonball: As it's name suggests, this ability lets the player launch a single cannonball, causing an enemy ship to catch fire, creating chaos on the deck, and slowing down the vessel temporarily. This is very useful for gaining an edge in rate of fire or, if you find yourself in trouble, it makes escaping combat much easier.

Rain of Cannons: One of the the most powerful abilities at your disposal, Rain of Cannons is as awesomely potent as it sounds. Covering a wide area, players can literally rain pain upon their foes by dragging their finger over top of the enemy, unleashing a hailstorm of cannonballs from the sky, causing massive damage.

In Booty Hunters, players will control a powerful pirate vessel, and take to the high seas to gain fame and fortune. The demo only offers a taste of the experience that players can expect from the game as there will be a wide variety of quests to tackle, ships to unlock, regions to explore, dangerous and quirky enemies to defeat and a compelling story campaign that will take players on a quest for immortality.

Booty Hunters iOS: A High Seas Adventure in the Palm of Your Hands Tue, 14 Oct 2014 11:46:41 -0400 Daniel R. Miller

Andrew Palmer Martinson, the game's Lead Developer, attributes his inspirations for Booty Hunters to games like Uncharted Waters: New Horizons as well as his own life experiences in sailing. Over time, Martinson has brought in a young, diverse and talented team from all over the country to form Volite Games, a new start up company looking to bring something different to the Apple Marketplace.

Booty Hunters is a high seas adventure that lets players captain and develop their own pirate ships, while testing their mettle in an open oceanic world, filled with rival ships, legendary relics and buried treasure. The game is built to be a very customizable experience, allowing players to utilize their own individual playing styles by being able to play the game in a variety of ways and offers many hours of replayability.

Booty Hunters is a fresh take on mobile gaming and aims to incorprate mechanics from a multitude of genres ranging from RPG to Strategy and even Battle Arena. A player's ship can hold four abilities at a time that can be swapped in and out every time a player docks at a port.  With over 20 unique abilities to choose from, Booty Hunters encourages players to experiment and dive into the many systems the game has to offer.  The primary gameplay, Martinson describes, is made up of a branch the team calls, "Adventures". Adventures are the focal point of the Booty Hunters experience as it involves the exploration of the world and a large chunk of that game's satisfying naval combat while offering a variety of different challenges for players to conquer.

Attack: Players can take on the role of a mercenary by helping nations to expand their influence in order to gain additional coin for upgrading ships and notoriety in order to gain fame within the world.

Contraband: Players take a more stealthy approach by sneaking past patrols to deliver illegal goods to various ports.

Diving Party: Players take on the role of a guardian in order to protect a party in shallow waters who are hunting for sunken treasure.

Race: Players take on AI opponents in a sprint to uncover a hidden relic. Little does the player know that the enemy convoy is only half the battle, for they must also contend with the native tribe that protects the precious relic.

Retrieval: Players can gain positive influence by helping regular townsfolk search for lost objects around the game world. However, the player also has the option to not return the lost objects and keep whatever they find. This does not come without a cost as this course of action serves to increase the player's notoriety within the world.

Volcanic Panic: Players can play the role of hero by rescuing as many villages as possible in a given area around an erupting volcano before the area is flooded with lava. (see image below)

Booty Hunters is a game that aims to offers something new with an engaging world to the Apple Marketplace and the team at Volite Games is hard at work to deliver on that promise. Exploration is another major facet of Booty Hunters as there will be numerous ports scattered all around the world. Some of these ports will hold special upgrades and advanced ship classes that can only be accessed if the player has found that specific port. On top of all of this, players will be responsible for maintaining their crew whom they can upgrade and recruit from these ports, so finding time to go ashore is crucial to success in the world of Booty Hunters. When asked for a release window, Martinson has said that he would like the game out the door "early in 2015".
