The studio Spiders has released some more gameplay footage for its upcoming game The Technomancer the sequel (or possibly prequel?) to their 2013 game Mars: War Logs. The footage shows off the base mechanics, such as changing stances and technomancer abilities, as well as crafting. But the biggest draw would have to be the cyberpunk aesthetic.

The Technomancer definitely looks cool, but I’m no stranger to Spiders' games, and it makes me wary. The last two titles they put out, Mars: War Logs and Bound by Flame, were rough to say the least. Mars: War Logs which is the first game in the (now) series was a diamond in the rough - the story was interesting and the main character, while being a pretty stereotypical tough guy, was still pretty likable. But despite the cool setting, the game had some glaring flaws: poorly paced social strings (went straight from meeting someone to them declaring their love for me), the length of the game, and general jankiness made it pretty hard to recommend to people who didn't like RPGs and cyberpunk.

The game they released after that was...not very good. Don't get me wrong, Bound by Flame really tried. But the lackluster characters, forgettable protagonist, and boring plotline just killed it for me as far as narrative-driven RPGs go. And the jank didn't get any better, either.

The big question is: Can Spiders learn from its mistakes and deliver this time?

What I've seen of The Technomancer looks really good, and if they've fixed the issues they've had in the past, I’ll play the hell out of it. I’m just not sure if that's going to happen. I guess I'll find out when the game drops in 2016 for Xbox One, PS4 and PC.

What about you? Are you hyped for Technomancer, or do you have reservations of your own? Let me know in the comments!

Bound By Flame Guide: Warrior Skill Tree https://www.gameskinny.com/qsv9r/bound-by-flame-guide-warrior-skill-tree https://www.gameskinny.com/qsv9r/bound-by-flame-guide-warrior-skill-tree Thu, 22 May 2014 07:03:08 -0400 Synzer

The Warrior is a physical-based, two-handed weapon skill tree in Bound By Flame. It boosts all attacks and skills with two-handed weapon and the Warrior Stance. Like Ranger, Warrior works well with the Pyromancer skill tree to augment your fighting style, but is great on its own.

If you like swinging big weapons, breaking through enemy armor, and feeling like an unstoppable tank, then the Warrior skill tree is for you! If you'd like to see other guides and tips on Bound By Flame, please visit the Master Guide List.

This guide will cover everything about the Warrior skill tree including:

  • Warrior Skill List - Every skill in the Warrior tree and what they do.
  • Suggested Skills - Tips on what skills to look at and suggestions on what to get first.

Warrior Skill List

There are four tiers of the skill tree: Novice, Amateur, Expert, and Master. Each requires a certain number of points to reach the next tier and you start with Novice already unlocked.

  • Amateur requires six points in the Warrior skill tree to unlock.
  • Expert requires 12 points.
  • Master requires 24 points.

Reaching these tiers unlocks new skills to use points on. There are five total skill lines: Powerful Attack, Circular Attack, Vitality, Guard Break, and Parry. You must put points in the skill lines to unlock skills in the higher tiers of the tree.

Each skill has three levels to upgrade. After unlocking each tier, you can put points in equal to the number of the previous tier. For example: If you put two points in a skill and unlocked the next tier, you can only put two points in the next skill. Once you put three points in the previous skill, you can put 3 points in the higher skill.

    • Level 2 - Health regen +2 per second.

Suggested Skills

A Warrior fights at close range and takes more hits than the other fighting styles. This means you should increase your survivability early on to help with the later levels.

  • Vitality is required if you want to go far as a Warrior. You should put points in this early for the health regen and many resistances it gives.
  • Parrying is important. Put at least two points in Improved Parrying early on so you can parry from any angle.

  • Powerful Attack is the first attack skill line to max for sure. It gives a great damage increase and high ability to interrupt.
  • Work on Circular Attack to unlock Rage.

That covers everything on the Warrior skill tree. If you want tips and guides on anything else related to Bound By Flame, be sure to check out the Master Guide List.

Bound By Flame Guide: Pyromancer Skill Tree https://www.gameskinny.com/cd55e/bound-by-flame-guide-pyromancer-skill-tree https://www.gameskinny.com/cd55e/bound-by-flame-guide-pyromancer-skill-tree Wed, 21 May 2014 08:25:01 -0400 Synzer

The Pyromancer is the magic-based skill tree in Bound By Flame. It is not a separate stance like dual-wielding and warrior. Instead, they're skills that you use in any stance. It still has its own tree and you have to put points in it to make it better, like the other trees.

This skill tree is great on its own, but also very helpful for either of the other two fighting styles. If you like magic and long-ranged combat, or just making your other fighting styles more powerful, then the Pyromancer is for you!

If you'd like help with anything else in Bound By Flame, then please visit the Master Guide List.

This guide will cover everything about the Pyromancer skill tree including:

  • Pyromancer Skill List - Every skill in the Pyromancer tree and what they do.
  • Suggested Skills - Tips on what skills to look at and suggestions on what to get first.

Pyromancer Skill List

There are four tiers of the skill tree: Novice, Amateur, Expert, and Master. Each requires a certain number of points to reach the next tier and you start with Novice already unlocked.

  • Amateur requires six points in the Pyromancer skill tree to unlock.
  • Expert requires 12 points.
  • Master requires 24 points.

Reaching these tiers unlocks new skills to use points on. There are five total skill lines: Orb of Fire, Burning Weapon, Concentration, Flame Mastery, and Intense Heat.

    • Level 2 - Chance of critical hit with Orb of Fire and fire Wave +10%.

    • Level 2 - Increases radius to 12m.
    • Level 3 - The spirit sends out 2 more fire orbs before disappearing.

Suggested Skills

I'll go over some skills, and order to get them in, for those wanting to use magic as their main source of damage.

  • Orb of Fire first. This is your main attack and does a lot of damage, especially when upgraded. I suggest at least upgrading to level 3 of the Novice tier.
  • Concentration is the best skill line. It adds damage to all your fire skills, critical hit chance, more orbs of fire, more magic/magic regen, and anything else you could want. Of course, you still need to put points in the other skills to make this worth it.
  • Flaming Weapon next, even if you don't use it much. You only need one tier of it, then you can put points in Conflagration, as long as you put point in Orb of Fire.
  • Pick up Guardian Flames and/or Fire Wave depending on what you want more. If you die easily, try using Guardian Flames. If you want to keep people away from you, use Fire Wave.

Bound By Flame Guide: Ranger Skill Tree https://www.gameskinny.com/sb9d9/bound-by-flame-guide-ranger-skill-tree https://www.gameskinny.com/sb9d9/bound-by-flame-guide-ranger-skill-tree Mon, 19 May 2014 11:07:05 -0400 Synzer

The Ranger is the dual-wielding skill tree in Bound By Flame. It boosts all attacks and action of the ranger/stealth stance in the game. This fighting style is great on its own, but also mixes well with pyromancer. There's even a skill in stealth that lets you get bonus damage from stealth while using crossbows and fire spells.

If you like playing rogues, enjoy fast-paced combat, and want to dodge a lot, then the Ranger skill tree is for you! If you'd like to see other guides and tips on Bound By Flame, please visit the Master Guide List.

This guide will cover everything about the Ranger skill tree including:

  • Ranger Skill List - Every skill in the Ranger tree and what they do.
  • Suggested Skills - Tips on what skills to look at and suggestions on what to get first.

Ranger Skill List

There are four tiers of the skill tree: Novice, Amateur, Expert, and Master. Each requires a certain number of points to reach the next tier and you start with Novice already unlocked.

  • Amateur requires six points in the Ranger skill tree to unlock.
  • Expert requires 12 points.
  • Master requires 24 points.

Reaching these tiers unlocks new skills to use points on. There are five total skill lines: Fast Attacks, Assault, Stealth, Blocking, and Dodging.

    • Level 1 - Time slows down while you act normally. Relative speed +60% for 10 seconds.
    • Level 2 - Relative speed +100%
    • Level 3 - Effect lasts 5 seconds longer.

Suggested Skills

Most of the skills are great and you'll want to pick them up. When you get them is another story.

  • Dual-wielding play styles require fast attacks, a lot of critical hits, and dodging everything. I suggest looking at those areas of skills first.
  • Blocking is less than helpful as a Ranger, so I wouldn't worry about points in those, you'll be dodging most of the time.

I would focus on putting points in the Dodging skill line first to make later fights much easier.

  • This line lets you counter enemies more easily and lets you dodge while countering.

Putting a point or two in Stealth early on helps a bunch too.

  • This lets you move faster in stealth and makes detection harder.

Maxing the fast attacks and assault skill lines is a must.

  • These increase your damage significantly.

Stealth is good to level after the others.

  • Even though you want the others first, this skill line helps by giving you huge boosts of damage before the fight even starts.
  • Also helpful if you use fire spells or crossbows.
  • Doesn't help in boss fights, so the other skill lines help more overall.

That wraps up the Ranger skill tree guide. If you want tips and guides on anything else related to Bound By Flame, be sure to check out the Master Guide List.

Bound By Flame Review: Such Potential https://www.gameskinny.com/0a689/bound-by-flame-review-such-potential https://www.gameskinny.com/0a689/bound-by-flame-review-such-potential Thu, 15 May 2014 13:50:08 -0400 Synzer

Bound By Flame is an interesting RPG. It has a unique and easy to use crafting system, three fighting styles, a fun upgrade system, and well, there's combat. I'll get to that later.

What does Bound By Flame bring to the table you ask? What does it have that other RPGs don't? Well, that's hard to say. It depends on what you want. I will give my take on the game though and talk a bit about what the game currently has to offer. You can decide whether it's worth your time.

The Demon Within

The defining mechanic of the game is dealing with the demon inside. You can choose to let it take over, and grant you more power, or stay in control and keep your humanity.

Your appearance changes if the demon takes over and I honestly like this feature. They even go as far as disabling helmets when you grow horns.

This also changes how your companions interact with you. Some may hate the change and turn on you, others might agree. Supposedly there are romance options in the game but I didn't see any. My guess is that nobody wants to go out with someone possessed 100% by a demon. People these days.

Repetitive Combat is Repetitive

Don't get me wrong I like the combat, but it is very much of the same. The game is unforgiving and you'll die a lot if you aren't careful. The problem is, that's how you get through it, by being careful.

You can switch between two stances at anytime, even during combat. Warrior uses two-handed weapons and Ranger dual-wields daggers. There is also fire magic, but you can use it in any stance.

I used dual-wielding mostly and had to dodge everything. I do mean everything. You forget to dodge that skeleton sneaking up behind you? You are dead! I died so many times I thought I was Sean Bean.

Don't get the wrong idea, this isn't like Dark Souls. I fixed this by literally spamming dodge and using hit and run tactics. It was satisfying to take down enemies, but it was the same thing every time. The only thing that changed, was when I had to dodge.

Personally, it didn't bother me too much, maybe cause the game isn't that long, but I'm sure many people got tired of it. Overall, I do like the combat, I just wish there were more mechanics. We might be able to solve this by letting me dodge in ANY direction and not just backwards.

Craft your way to Victory

Seriously though, you can. I love that you craft in the field, mix ingredients to make others, and even buy them with gold (but don't ask me who you're giving that gold to in the middle of nowhere).

The problem, or solution depending on how you look at it, is you can craft in the middle of a battle. That's right, you can open the menu during a fight, craft a potion or mix some ingredients, then go about your business.

It's like I'm in an anime where the enemy lets me explain my life story between attacks. Admittedly, this helped me out in more than one occasion.

The upgrade system is nice though. It's great that the visual of your gear changes depending on what you upgrade it to. The stats also help a lot, and that's what you should look for. It would have been nice to choose my appearance of the gear and not have it rely on the type of upgrade it is, but this is better than nothing.

I beat it, now what?

That's what I asked after beating the game. I don't think that's the response you want. I won't spoil anything, but I didn't feel fulfilled. It does set up the game for a Bound By Flame 2 - well, one choice does anyway.

Still, it was a little short and I felt like I wasted my time at the end. There is no new game+ like many RPGs, but there are several choices, skills, and play styles to choose from. This gives the game a longer life and I'm interested to see how the game is playing as a female character.

In short, if you really want an RPG and you've played what's already out there, give this a try. If you're someone who has precious time and can't play a lot of games, I'd skip this. Of course, you may think differently. The only way to know is to try it yourself.

Bound By Flame Guide: Warrior Combat Tips https://www.gameskinny.com/0cdvr/bound-by-flame-guide-warrior-combat-tips https://www.gameskinny.com/0cdvr/bound-by-flame-guide-warrior-combat-tips Wed, 14 May 2014 12:34:08 -0400 Synzer

The warrior in Bound By Flame is like the classic warrior class in most RPGs. They wield two-handed weapons, hit hard, and soak up damage. Unlike pyromancer, you don't keep your distance. No need to use hit and run tactics like dual wielding players, just get up in the enemy's face like a boss.

Just be sure to master blocking and parrying, or you will be eating the floor a lot. This guide will help you understand how a warrior fights, along with some tips to get better. For anything else Bound By Flame related, visit the Master Guide List.

This guide will cover everything about warrior combat including:

  • Warrior Stance - What it is and why it is important.
  • Combat Basics - Basic tips to help you master this fighting style.
  • Warrior Skill Tree - What it is and why you should use it.
  • Feats - Helpful feats for this fighting stance.

Warrior Stance - Stand tall

In order to fight with two-handed weapons, you have to get in Warrior Stance. To do this, open the tactical menu and select Warrior Stance. Alternatively, you can press the switch combat stance button.

As long as you have either a two-handed sword, hammer, or axe, you'll pull it out when you attack in this stance.

Combat Basics - Master the Guard Break

When using this stance, you get access to Guard Break. On shielding enemies, this breaks through their defense and makes them vulnerable for a short time. For other enemies, it interrupts what they are doing. Mastering this will stop enemies from doing power attacks, which could save your life.

  • If you see an enemy charging up, or sitting in one spot, use guard break. It can stop their attack from ever happening and gives you a chance to attack.
  • Use it often on non-melee enemies to give you an advantage.

Blocking and parrying are two other important things. Blocking is more important for warriors because they can't dodge and attack at close range. If you block at the last moment of an enemy's attack, you'll parry and counter-attack them.

  • Watch strong enemies, especially bosses, for fight patterns. If you pay attention, you'll know when an attack comes and can parry with ease.

Besides the normal attack, you get a circular attack. This is chargeable and hits multiple enemies at once. The more you charge, the longer the attack goes.

Warrior Skill Tree

Just holding a two-handed weapon and fighting doesn't make you a warrior. To get the most out of this play style, you have to put skill points in the warrior tree. Below are explanations of each branch in the tree.

  • Powerful Attack - This enhances your normal attack. It involves increasing damage and ability to interrupt.
  • Circular Attack - This enhances your area attack. You'll be able to reduce charge time and increase radius, among other things. You also need points in both this and Powerful Attack, to put points in Rage. Rage gets triggered from killing enemies and increases health regeneration.

  • Vitality - This significantly increases health regeneration and resistances to all forms of damage. Definitely worth putting points in.
  • Guard Break - This enhances Guard Break to have a higher chance of interrupt and ability to knock down enemies.
  • Parry - This enhances your ability parry. It lets you parry from all sides and chance to critically hit with a parry.

Feats

These passive skills are separate from your skill points so you can get these without sacrificing your skill tree. I'll show you some that are helpful to warrior.

Exploration

  • Tough and Colossus are important for the health boosts they give.
  • Everyone needs Practical and Passionate because it increases experience gained from killing enemies.

Combat

  • It is a good idea to get Swashbuckler, Slugger, and Executioner, because you never know which weapon you'll have. They each give a bonus to either swords, hammer, or axes.

Crafting

  • Healer is a good choice because you'll get more health back when using healing potions. As a warrior, you'll most likely take more damage than normal.

That's everything on warrior combat in Bound By Flame. If you'd like help with anything else, please check out the Master Guide List. If you have any questions, or suggestions, feel free to leave a comment below!

Bound By Flame Guide: Feats List and Tips https://www.gameskinny.com/d27ek/bound-by-flame-guide-feats-list-and-tips https://www.gameskinny.com/d27ek/bound-by-flame-guide-feats-list-and-tips Tue, 13 May 2014 11:58:32 -0400 Synzer

Feats in Bound By Flame are passive skills that anyone can use, regardless of fighting style. You get one point every time you level up and it is separate from the skill points you get for the combat skill trees.

They fit into three different categories: exploration, combat, and crafting. Most of them help your character tremendously, so don't forget to put points in them. There is technically a fourth category, but only if you let the demon take over. These feats also unlock automatically, so you don't use any points on them.

I'll go over each feat in the game and tips on each one. If you'd like tips on anything else related to Bound By Flame, check out the Master Guide List.

This guide will cover everything about Feats including:

  • Feats List - Every feat in the game and how to unlock them.
  • Feats Tips - Suggestions on which feats to use for each play style.
Feats List

Bound By Flame has enough content to play through the game more than once if you want to experience everything. Through combat style choices, dealing with the demon inside you, and choosing your companions, there's plenty to see.

Would you like to be quick, stealthy, and take down enemies while dual wielding daggers? Maybe, you want to stand tall and swing a mighty two-handed weapon? Of course, burning your enemies with the many fire skills is always an option. Whatever the case, I'll help you with whatever you need.

There's more than a few guides I'm doing on this game, so I'm putting them all in this convenient location. I've linked everything I've done for Bound By Flame  below. I've also put guides that I'm doing soon in bold, so you know what to expect.

Bound By Flame Guide: Pyromancer Combat Tips https://www.gameskinny.com/7uw0w/bound-by-flame-guide-pyromancer-combat-tips https://www.gameskinny.com/7uw0w/bound-by-flame-guide-pyromancer-combat-tips Fri, 09 May 2014 15:22:55 -0400 Synzer

The Pyromancer skill tree isn't originally available to you when you start Bound By Flame. You unlock it after your first boss fight. It is a great skill tree with a variety of uses. You can use it to augment your melee combat, whether you choose dual-wielding or two-handed. You can play a classic fire mage with long-range attacks or fiery knockbacks. You can even use it to shield yourself to take less damage. Whatever you choose, this skill line is very helpful.

For more tips and guides, check out the Master Guide List.

This guide will cover everything about Pyromancer combat including:

  • Demonic Presence - What it is and why it is important.
  • Combat Basics - Basic tips to help you master this fighting style.
  • Pyromancer Skill Tree - What it is and why you should use it.
  • Feats - Helpful feats for this fighting style.
Demonic Presence - There isn't enough room for two souls.

The main part of Bound By Flame is dealing with the spirit that possesses your body. You can choose to control it and keep your humanity, or let it take over and turn into the demon. Both have positives and negatives. Different NPCs have different opinions on your possession, so you'll lose at least someone depending on which route you take.

Controlling the demon

If you don't want the spirit to possess more of your body, (sounds like a bad time, right?!) then you don't have to. You keep your humanity, and your appearance, but you don't get access to the bonuses of possession.

Letting the demon in

When you let the demon take over, your appearance starts to change. The more it possesses you, the more you start to look like it. This gives you access to automatic feats that you don't have to put points in.

These feats give:

  • More Magic
  • Faster Magic Regeneration

Another part of the transformation is getting horns. This means that you can no longer wear helmets. Clever addition I might add. You also take more damage from ice attacks. Yeah, I don't get that part either. Still, if you plan to use Pyromancer as your main source of attack, letting the demon take possession is a good idea.

Combat Basics - Kill it with fire!

As stated before there are different ways to use the Pyromancer style. If you choose to use it defensively, or to augment your melee attacks, not much changes from the normal way of fighting. Just use Burning Weapon, Guardian Flames, or both when you start combat.

If you want to do more long-range or typical magic spells, you have to play differently.

  • Orb of Fire is your main attack. It launches a fireball at the enemy.
  • The other attack is Fire Wave. This pushes enemies back in a 4m radius.

Considering these spells have a cast time, you want to stay away from enemies as much as possible.

  • Keep your distance and watch your surroundings. Enemies can sneak up on you if you don't pay attention.
  • When they get too close, push them back with Fire Wave.
  • Guardian Flames can give you extra protection when they do get close to you.

Regardless of what you do, you still have to use weapons. The stance you are in is important, though you can switch at anytime.

I suggest Stealth Stance so you can dodge attacks if you're using long-range fire attacks. The Ranger skill tree also has some helpful skills for fiery combat.

Pyromancer Skill Tree - Everything Burns!

This skill tree is important for anyone using fire spells. There are several skills that increase damage, duration, and other helpful things for your fire spells.

  • The Orb of Fire tree increases damage, chance to critically hit, and adds more fireballs to the attack.
  • Burning Weapon increases the damage and duration of the skill. It also lets you cast it instantly.
  • Concentration is the most important no matter what you do. This decreases cast time, gives faster magic regeneration, increases damage of all fire spells, and increases chance to critically hit with Orb of Fire and Fire Wave.

  • Guardian Flames increases the damage resistance and adds damage when someone attacks you while you have the skill activated.
  •  Fire Wave reduces the cost, increases the damage, and decreases cast time.

When you get 24 points in the Pyromancer skill tree, you unlock Fire Spirit. This spell creates a spirit that shoots up to 4 fire orbs at enemies in an 8m radius. This is very helpful when combined with your other fire spells.

Feats - Helpful boosts

There are multiple feats that help with Pyromancer. Some aren't so obvious.

Exploration

  • Energetic and Intense are obviously important because they raise your max magic.
  • Take Practical and Passionate no matter what you do. They increase the experience you get for killing enemies.

Combat

  • You need Temperate and Wise because they lower the cost of fire spells. Now you can use a lot more before running out.

Crafting

  • Alchemist is great because it recovers an extra 25% magic when using a mana potion.
  • Apothecary is also something to get if you use a lot of magic. This lowers the number of ingredients required to make potions.

That's everything on using Pyromancer combat in Bound By Flame. If you want other guides on this game, be sure to go to the Master Guide List. If you have any questions, or suggestions, let me know in the comments.

Bound by Flame Review (PC Edition) https://www.gameskinny.com/k2wl4/bound-by-flame-review-pc-edition https://www.gameskinny.com/k2wl4/bound-by-flame-review-pc-edition Thu, 08 May 2014 19:17:49 -0400 B. Chambers

Bound by Flame won't win any game-of-the-year awards, but it will give RPG fans who like linear, dialog-driven RPGs something to chew on while they wait for the next big thing to come around.

BLUF (Bottom Line Up Front) - Players who enjoy Role-Playing Games that are:  heavy on dialog; challenging, even on the easier settings; very linear and succinct; and that showcase little variety in the combat and leveling systems, should find something to like about Bound by Flame. Also, keep in mind that I played an earlier build of the game. Focus Home Interactive said they'd be tweaking and improving the PC version right up until launch day.

With that in mind, let's take a look at how different types of gamers may respond to Bound by Flame.

Action Junkies Category - Combat System

What you'll like...

  • Combat is very intuitive and easy to pick up and play.
  • Combat is somewhat tactical in that it punishes vanilla button mashing.
  • The combat system showcases a good amount of variety--different stances allow you to approach combat as a tank, a rogue or a mage. It's also very easy to switch between these stances during battle.
  • The Companion system allows you choose an NPC to fight alongside you.

What you may not like...

  • Combat is extremely repetitive.
  • Defeating enemies in battle requires more patience than tactical skill.
  • Combat with run-of-the-mill enemies often takes too long and can become tedious.
  • Minor camera control issues can cause some frustration in more tense fights.
  • Your companions will often feel useless in combat, not aiding you as much as they should.
  • There's no way to revive incapacitated companions during battle.
Bookworms Category - Story and Characters

What you'll like...

  • While the story is very much your standard RPG fare, the hook of being inhabited by a demon does make for some interesting plot elements.
  • Interesting characters.
  • Excellent voice acting.

What you may not like...

  • This story is the same old song you've heard many times.
  • Choices affecting the plot seem contrived and overly simplified.
  • The writing often feels a bit corny featuring characters using language ranging from King James Biblical English to contemporary American English.
  • The plot is slightly disjointed and abrupt in its delivery.

Builders Category - Leveling System

What you'll like...

  • Unlike most European RPGs, Bound By Flame's leveling system does not force you to pigeon-hole your character in terms of what class you develop.

What you may not like...

  • The level cap and scripted leveling never really allowed me to feel like I was growing or getting stronger.

Explorers Category

What you may not like...

  • Bound by Flame is extremely linear and does not really allow for much exploration.
  • Questing feels very formulaic and tedious.

 Audiophiles Category

What you'll like...

  • Excellent soundtrack.
  • Excellent voice acting.

 Visualists Category

What you'll like...

  • Great use of color, lighting and texturing

 What you may not like...

  • Dated character models--seems obvious that this game was not built from the ground up for current generation consoles.

 Achievers Category - Steam/PS4/Xbox 360 Achievements

What you'll like...

  • Achievements are fairly standard for an action RPG and mostly fun to acquire.
Verdict

Bound by Flame is listed as Focus Home Intereactive's most ambitious RPG to date. While it does follow the formula of their past RPGs, I agree that this entry attempted to expand and improve on that foundation. They still have some progress to make before their games can be considered truly great, but there is enough fun here to satisfy players who can look past the shortcomings I've mentioned in this review.

Bound By Flame Guide: Dual Wielding Combat Tips https://www.gameskinny.com/iacij/bound-by-flame-guide-dual-wielding-combat-tips https://www.gameskinny.com/iacij/bound-by-flame-guide-dual-wielding-combat-tips Thu, 08 May 2014 10:17:38 -0400 Synzer

Bound By Flame gives you multiple choices when it comes to combat. One of those is dual wielding daggers. This combat choice is faster pace and requires more precision than two-handed weapons or pyromancer. You also need to avoid being hit more. For people who like fast, rogue/ninja-like combat, this is your weapon stance of choice.

For anything else Bound By Flame related, check out the Master Guide List.

This guide will cover everything about dual wielding combat including:

  • Stealth Stance - What it is and why it is important.
  • Combat Basics - Basic tips to help you master this fighting style.
  • Ranger Skill Tree - What it is and why you should use it.
  • Feats - Helpful feats for this fighting stance.
Stealth Stance - Attack from the shadows.

Before you can even start fighting with daggers, besides equipping them of course, you have to switch to stealth stance. To do this, open the tactical menu and select stealth stance. Alternatively, you can press the switch combat stance button.

As long as you have daggers equipped, you'll pull them out when switching to stealth stance.

Combat Basics - Dodge all the time.

When using this stance, you get access to dodging. I suggest you use it. Without dodging, you're going to have a hard time. Enemies are relentless in this game and this fighting style requires a lot of quick attacks. The only way to survive is to dodge as many attacks as you can.

  • When you dodge right before being attacked, you can riposte. You'll see a slight slow down, like bullet time, and can get an extra attack in.
  • Pay close attention to your enemies attack patterns. If you watch closely, you'll know when they attack and can dodge them.
  • Charging up your assault attack unleashes a flurry of attacks. Use this when your enemy is defenseless.
  • Move Constantly. Besides dodging this it the most important. Move often and attack in short bursts. If you do this, you can take out enemies without every taking damage.
Ranger Skill Tree -  Choose the right skills.

Knowing how to fight isn't the only important part about dual wielding combat. You also want to pick skills to improve yourself passively. The Ranger skill tree is the one that increases your skills with daggers.

I'll do an in-depth guide on each ranger skill, but for now, here are some things to keep in mind.

  • If you want to increase your dodging skills, go to dodging on the skill tree and put point in all the skills connected to it. These skills increase riposte with things like extra critical hit damage and increased time to riposte after dodging.
  • Blocking doesn't have many skills, but they allow you to sprint in combat, move faster while parrying, and take less damage when moving or dodging.
  • The Stealth skill line lets you move faster, do more damage, and not get detected easily while you're in stealth.

  • Fast Attacks and Assault are your two ways of attacking. Both skills lines increase damage and critical hit chance of each respective attack. You also need to max both if you want the ability to poison your enemies while attacking with daggers.

When you get 24 points in the ranger skill tree, you unlock Speed Demon. This slows down time for 10 seconds to make it easier to dodge and attack quickly.

Feats - Helpful boosts.

In Bound By Flame, you don't get just skill points when you level, you also get feat points to spend. There are a variety of categories, but I'll tell you some useful ones for dual wielding combat in this guide.

Exploration

  • Tough and Colossus are always good to have because they increase your health. If you think you can dodge things like a pro, skip it. For safety, go for these.
  • Take Practical and Passionate no matter what you do. They increase the experience you get for killing enemies.

Combat

  • Assassin is the only one you need. It increases critical hit change of daggers by 2%.

That's it for this guide on Dual Wielding Combat in Bound By Flame. If you'd like help with anything is in Bound By Flame, visit the Master Guide List. If you have any questions, or suggestions, let me know in the comments!

Bound by Flame Releases Friday, May 9th https://www.gameskinny.com/13frl/bound-by-flame-releases-friday-may-9th https://www.gameskinny.com/13frl/bound-by-flame-releases-friday-may-9th Mon, 05 May 2014 08:38:55 -0400 Hobo With A Keyboard

Bound by Flame is an upcoming RPG due for release this Friday. Developed by Spiders, it revolves around your character, Corky--a Warrior of the Pure-Blades-- and his endeavours to help defeat the Lords of Ice. The Pure-Blades' primary purpose is to protect the mages, known as the Red Scholars, who believe they have a way to overcome the might of the Lords of Ice. You are pitted into this fantasy world of good and evil, but with a conflicting crisis over right or wrong yourself; the demon within you grows. But how much will you allow it to do so?

"There is not enough space inside you for two souls. That demon wants your body. It will control you more and more, until it has replaced you completely..."

These words are uttered by an anonymous wise man on the new launch trailer for Bound by Flame, as a cinematic montage depicts the transformation of your possessed character.

Bound by flame press packThe selling point of this game is the different ways in which one can choose to fight and the different ways in which plot outcomes arise as a result of the choices you make.

Ways to influence such outcomes of the game are affected by your relationships with the other NPCs that fight alongside or against you, and the way in which you develop your character through the Talent Tree. There is also an intricate crafting system, that allows you to use parts of things that you scavenge from various areas in the game, and from the corpses of your foes.

The talent tree is made up of 3 main classes which are: Martial Techniques, Way of the Shadow, and Fire Magic. Martial Techniques are the standard "Warrior" type melee skills. Way of the Shadow implies a more tactical blend of agility and stealth, using double-blades. Fire Magic obviously sounds the coolest, allowing you to summon fire spirits, flaming blades and fireballs. However, to utilise Fire Magic, you must allow the demon within you to become more of a part of you--you must become evil.

So no prizes for guessing exactly how you may change the outcome of the later game and ending. But by looking at the bold, grandiose aesthetics of this game, I doubt its intentions were to ever be of such ilk.  Just check out how blatantly awesome these ghoulish demons look... If I get around to playing this game I'll hedge my bets with the baddies, thanks.

Upcoming Game Releases - May 2014 https://www.gameskinny.com/qf1t9/upcoming-game-releases-may-2014 https://www.gameskinny.com/qf1t9/upcoming-game-releases-may-2014 Tue, 29 Apr 2014 15:28:46 -0400 NorthwestGamer

Well, we have officially finished a third of 2014, and seen surprisingly good games for the start of the year. A portion of this success is probably due to the release of the PS4 and Xbox One.

Unfortunately, they can't keep pouring out great games forever; however, fortunately, they have not run out yet. May has a large number of new, notable games and while many of them may be collections or ports, there are still some pretty big new titles in here.

This month, I had to call a draw for the most anticipated game. While this seems like a cheap way to avoid making a decision, one of the most anticipated games is coming to everything except Wii U and the other is a Wii U exclusive. So, things worked out perfectly.

Without further ado, let's take a look into what May 2014 has to offer us.

Watch Dogs - Highly Anticipated

Watch Dogs

Release Date: May 27

Platforms: PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Windows, Xbox 360, Xbox One

It is almost like Watch Dogs was the most anticipated game before and then fell under the radar. With a 7 month delay. Originally intended as a next-gen launch title — many people seem to have moved on, but it is time to start remembering the game that got you so excited.

If you are a fan of open-world games and you are a stickler for detail, then Watch Dogs is the game for you. With so many people trying to get a world size comparison with Grand Theft Auto V, the developers want people to know that Watch Dogs is big, but it is not huge.

Instead of making the world immensely large, the developers chose to take the time to make sure that the world they did have is perfect. So expect the areas to be rich in details and full of numerous interactions.

A Wii U version of this game is in development, but will not be arriving until later this year.

Mario Kart 8 - Highly Anticipated

Mario Kart 8

Release Date: May 30   Platforms: Wii U

Everybody should have very fond memories of playing Mario Kart. It doesn't even matter which one, all of them have been great. Since the series first made its debut on the SNES, players have been constantly awaiting the next installment.

The newest installment in the franchise will build upon the previous games, particularly Mario Kart 7. This means that expanded customization, gliders, and many more great features will be arriving on console for the first time.

For those of you who have been on edge about a Wii U for a while, this might finally be the big game to make the decision for you.

Borderlands 2

Borderlands 2

Release Date: May 6   Platforms: PlayStation Vita

Pretty much all of you will know about Borderlands 2 (at least, I sure hope so). The sequel to 2K's critically-acclaimed Borderlands came in and improved on almost everything.

Since pretty much right after Borderlands 2 came out, 2K has been talking about bringing it to the Vita. Last year they finally officially announced it, and also announced that it would be available in a Vita bundle.

On May 6, the bundle will be arriving in stores and then the game will be available as an individual purchase on May 13.

Wolfenstein: The New Order

Wolfenstein: The New Order

Release Date: May 20

Platforms: PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Windows, Xbox 360, Xbox One

Anybody here remember back to the very first installment of this series? Back when Castle Wolfenstein released, back in 1981, many of today's gamers wouldn't have been alive, including myself.

These were the games that helped pioneer the gaming industry, and the series is still kicking today. The New Order is the newest installment in series that has been consistently releasing new games an average of about 4 years apart since that 1981 debut.

The last installment, Wolfenstein, was essentially a reboot for the series and, frankly, was not the game people had hoped for. The New Order looks like a great game so hopefully it can turn the tide on the new Wolfenstein games.

Bound By Flame

Bound By Flame

Release Date: May 9

Platforms: PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Windows, Xbox 360

Is there some sort of issue with the Xbox One that is scaring developers away? This is another of several games that have been releasing to the PlayStation 3 and 4, AND the Xbox 360, but not the Xbox One.

Most recently, and probably most significantly, we have been hearing lately about an undisclosed issue with the Xbox One that had halted development of The Amazing Spiderman 2 (the game) indefinitely. All other versions of the game are still planned to release April 29, as planned.

Anyways, now that I've got that off my chest. Bound By Flame looks like it is going to be a great action-RPG. It may not appear to be on the level of other upcoming games, such as Dragon Age: Inquisition, but it will be the best RPG that the PlayStation 4 has to offer... for now.

Stick it to the Man

Stick it to the Man

Release Date: May 6   Platforms: PlayStation 4

You know those games that looked really screwed up, but are actually really fun? Well Stick it to the Man is a perfect example of that. The game released to PlayStation 3 first, back in November, and then the Vita and PC in December.

PlayStation Plus members will be happy to know that, once it releases, the PlayStation 4 version will be available free as part of the Instant Game Collection.

This game is also slated to release to the Wii U in May, but, at the time of writing this article, there was no set date and, therefore, it could easily be delayed.

Mario Golf: World Tour

Mario Golf: World Tour

Release Date: May 2   Platforms: Nintendo 3DS

Ah, it's finally time for some love for the 3DS. I can still remember spending hours playing Toadstool Tour on my GameCube years ago, so I am excited to see a new title in the Mario Golf series.

As we all know, Mario and his friends tend to somehow always have great games, regardless of if they fighting, go-karting, golfing, or playing tennis. Some reviews have already been posted for this game (Metacritic already featured 26 critic reviews at the time of writing), so be sure to check them out.

Kirby: Triple Deluxe

Kirby: Triple Deluxe

Release Date: May 2  Platforms: Nintendo 3DS

Look at that, another 3DS game... on the same day. Seem like poor planning, two notable 3DS games come out all month and they're on the same day. Regardless, it could be an expensive days for Nintendo fans because both of the games are in a blockbuster Nintendo series.

I find that, of all Nintendo's most famous characters, Kirby's games seem to have the least love. Everybody I know loves Kirby, but from old games or from Super Smash Bros.; however, I think that Kirby has great current games and that this is something you should be looking into if you are a Nintendo fan.

God of War Collection

God of War Collection

Release Date: May 6   Platforms: PlayStation Vita

Having already been released on the PlayStation 3 back in 2009, the Vita version of the God of War Collection will be coming May 6, this year. This collection contains God of War and God of War II, so it is not to be confused with the God of War: Origins Collection, which includes the two PSP God of War games.

Bound by Flame Releases All You Need to Know Trailer https://www.gameskinny.com/d1pme/bound-by-flame-releases-all-you-need-to-know-trailer https://www.gameskinny.com/d1pme/bound-by-flame-releases-all-you-need-to-know-trailer Fri, 14 Feb 2014 17:13:00 -0500 Cosmic Engine

If you're wondering what upcoming RPG Bound by Flame is all about, fear not. The new trailer of the game literally tells you everything you need to know. I have followed Bound by Flame for some time now and I'm cautiously optimistic about the new title.

Bound by Flame is being developed by Spiders Studios and published by Focus Interactive. Bound by Flame is certainly the most ambitious project Spiders Studios since working on Of Orcs and Men alongside French developer Cyanide Studios.

The game itself is a third person action role-playing game hyped to pack character, choices, and plenty of fire. You will be assuming the role of a mercenary, but not just any ol' run of the mill merc, mind you; one possessed by a flame demon. The developers themselves explain that the possession is a crucial mechanic in the game:

Your adventure in Bound by Flame will change radically according to the relationship you have with the demon: will you yield to the formidable power it gives you, or will you fight to preserve your human self? The reactions of the various characters and of your companions, and the very way the story unfolds will depend entirely on your decisions. Each of your choices will therefore have an influence, not only on what and who is around you, but also on yourself! The more of your humanity you lose and the more demonic powers you gain, the more your appearance is transformed and corrupted.”

The game will also boast companions, each with a unique storyline. You will be able to interact with your companions and even pursue romantic options with some of them.

According to the choices you made earlier in the story and to your relationship with the demon, you will build friendship, romance, or rivalry with them. Some may even abandon you or turn against you if what you become violates their principles... so be careful not to offend your favourite companion! Your very choices will shape your companions’ behaviour and evolution throughout your adventure.”

The game is certainly promising a lot and this is an ambitious undertaking for the studio. I have high hopes for the game and it could well be a real gem for RPG lovers (and give us a fix until Witcher 3 releases). The game is set to release in Q2 of this year on PC, Xbox one and Playstation 4.

New Bound by Flame Trailer https://www.gameskinny.com/ap6wl/new-bound-by-flame-trailer https://www.gameskinny.com/ap6wl/new-bound-by-flame-trailer Sat, 14 Sep 2013 20:36:17 -0400 GirlGoneGaming

A new trailer has just dropped for Focus Home Interactive and Spider Studio's upcoming action RPG title Bound By Flame. In the game, players assume the role of a mercenary possessed by a flame demon in a dark fantasy universe.

Players will have to choose between falling prey to the demonic influence and accepting the use of its evil powers, or rejecting the demon in order to develop heroic talents instead. The more you rely on the demon, the more warped and demonic your own appearance becomes.

The game sounds a mash up between Fable and Dragon Age, and is worth a look if that's how you like your RPGs. Peep the trailer for some undead action!

Bound by Flame was officially announced at Gamescom, and will be coming to PS3, PS4, PC and Xbox 360 sometime this year.
