THQ Nordic's Darksiders 3 hasn't been out for long, but its first major DLC expansion, The Crucible, is now available on all platforms. The new content provided by this DLC tests players' skills by pitting them against seemingly endless waves of powerful enemies. The payout for surviving includes various rare crafting materials, never-before-seen enchantments, and some brand new armor sets as well.

The Crucible is set up like an arena challenge — described in the game as the ultimate test of a warrior's strength. It's an event talked about only in whispers, and it is overseen by Targon, the only challenger ever able to successfully conquer the Crucible.

Due to its exclusive nature, players have to face specific trials before they can even enter the Crucible and begin their first challenge. Specifically, they must find and capture the first Deadly Sin to gain access to the Crucible and unlock the first 25 enemy waves. Doing the same for the second Deadly Sin unlocks the next 25 waves, and this continues until they've cleared 100 waves without dying.

The Crucible gives you a chance to experience its challenges without going all in, though. If you clear five waves without dying, for example, you can take your loot and walk away, or you can put everything on the line and try to clear all 100 waves. If you manage to do that without dying, then you unlock the Crucible's ultimate challenge.

Darksiders 3 was met with mixed reviews upon its release, with critics, including our own, praising its improvements over previous installments, while lamenting the lack of major changes or innovations in the overall setup. With this first expansion, it seems THQ Nordic is working on addressing these complaints, providing a healthy dose of new material and offering items that are useful in the main game as well.

How to Complete the Web Puzzles in Darksiders 3 https://www.gameskinny.com/hdow8/how-to-complete-the-web-puzzles-in-darksiders-3 https://www.gameskinny.com/hdow8/how-to-complete-the-web-puzzles-in-darksiders-3 Mon, 26 Nov 2018 16:13:57 -0500 Ty Arthur

When you aren't hacking 'n slashing through agents of the apocalypse in Darksiders 3, you'll be figuring out puzzles.

One of the more obtuse and grating ones first comes in the early game in the form of spider webs. Although Fury should be able to cut right through them, things are a bit more complicated than that. As you progress, you'll come across more and more, some progessively more "difficult" than the ones before them.

Luckily, there are a few tricks that will make solving these web puzzles a lot easier.

Making Bugs Go Boom

As you play, Fury will eventually come to a dead end in the Crossroads portion of the Haven area. This section of the tunnel has a hole in the ground that it looks like you should be able to jump into it, but it's covered up by webbing.

A respawning bug also chases you around the room, but throwing it at the webbing doesn't actually do anything. That's because you need it to eat some flaming goo first and become explosive.

Whenever you see an area with webbing, check the ceiling and look for a brown pod holding the flaming goo.

A simple hit with the whip knocks the goo down, which becomes an attractive feast for the bug. After they eat the goo, they become explosive -- but you've got to act quickly because they explode just a few seconds after being picked up.

Sometimes you also have to lure bugs from another nearby area. They typically follow you, but if the bug falls behind, just pick it up and throw it in the direction you need to go.

It's important to note that red webs regrow after a few seconds.

In a later area of Haven, you'll need two bugs in rapid succession to get through a red web then a white web, so lure one out from the tunnels first.

Once you unlock Fury's flame hollow form, you can ignite webs on your own without explosive bugs just by holding the secondary attack button, or by holding the jump button while in midair.

You'll need this trick for the later puzzles where you have to light multiple webs on fire in conjunction with explosive bugs.

Using Explosive Bugs For Timed Puzzles

The most frustrating web puzzle takes place in the Catacombs section of the Hollows area, where there's a pressure plate that moves a statue into a position that's out of reach. The problem is that there isn't enough time to get on the plate and throw the bug at the statue before it explodes.

To complete this puzzle, go up the stairs and leap across the room with the pressure plate toward the webbing on the far left side. The fire hollow form actually makes this annoying to complete correctly, since it defaults to the boost jump if you hold the jump button too long.

When leaping across, immediately release the jump button and swing your whip to grab onto the ledge and fly toward the wall (you can still do this even if you've switched from the whip to the crystal shard sword).

When you reach the opposite side, either hold secondary attack or press and hold jump to light the web on fire, which will knock down the explosive goo in the center between the left and right webs.

With the goo down, lure a bug over so it becomes explosive. Here's the key though -- don't pick up the bug!

Instead, run all the way to the left side of the far left wall web and light it on fire with your attack, then immediately run back to the pressure plate.

After a moment, an ember will fly from the far left web and hit the bug, causing it to explode, which ignites the far right web that leads toward the statue.

If you ran fast enough, the flaming web will just barely hit the statue as it completes its rotation from the pressure plate, turning it red and opening the grate.

This puzzle is all about the timing, so if you just barely miss it, just get another bug and start over. Dodging instead of running can help you reach the pressure plate slightly quicker.

---

That's all you need to know to figure out the rest of the Darksiders 3 web puzzles! Have you come across any others that are stumping you? Let us know which ones you can't get past and we'll write up a new guide!

Yakuza (2005)

This man has been through it all; he has felled numerous skilled fighters, dealt with a thief of female underwear, and even taken care of a baby. John Marston

\n
Red Dead Redemption (2010)

Perhaps one of the most tragic heroes in gaming, John Marston knows the definition of dire straits all too well. Compelled to reunite with his family, who are being held captive by the government, Marston embarks on a harrowing journey through the chaos-sphere that is the Wild West.

\n

He is an outlaw -- a criminal, even -- and has no doubt committed numerous questionable deeds. But despite that, it is almost impossible to not relate with his noble intentions.

The Last of Us (2013)

She learns that, in a world where nobody can be trusted, a switchblade and a sniper rifle are your best friends. Them, and that Joel guy who has taught her how to survive in a post-apocalyptic world inhabited by monsters. That helps, too.

Doomguy

Doom (1993)

Not the fanciest name for someone who rips demons apart with his bare hands, but, thankfully, actions speak much louder than words. Doomguy is the eternally silent protagonist of the Doom series, one of the most historically significant franchises in the industry.

Dante

Devil May Cry (2001)

Dante's twin brother -- Vergil -- is already featured on our first list of 10 Most Badass Video Game Characters, but Dante deserves a spot just as much, if not more, than his brother.

\n

Possessing the enhancing power to transform into a demon -- much like his evil sibling -- Devil May Cry's Dante gives preference to oversized swords. However, he never lets go of his trusty handguns (Ebony and Ivory), which he uses to soften enemies up before cutting them into pieces.

Big Boss

\n
Metal Gear (1987)
\n

Solid Snake may be considered the main protagonist of the Metal Gear Solid series, but let's face it: he wouldn't even exist without Big Boss.

\n

Boss' first appearance was in the original Metal Gear, though he didn't become a playable character until much later when Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater was released. An unfortunate encounter with his former mentor leaves him with countless bruises, dislocated joints, and broken bones; later on, he even gets his eye shot out.

Aranea Highwind

\n
Final Fantasy XV (2016)

This gorgeous blonde may very well be the most stylish Final Fantasy character in over a decade. She joins Final Fantasy XV's party of heroes as a dominating force -- however briefly -- and adds an amusing flavor to their conversations.

\n

Aranea dons stylish battle armor and employs an impressively-sized lance during combat, which, of course, decimates her opponents. Beautiful, confident, and strong, Aranea Highwind is not hesitant to take on multiple foes at once -- and deals with them in brutal, timely fashion.

Resident Evil 2 (1998)
\n

Ada first appears in Resident Evil 2 as a supporting character, but she later plays a much more significant role in Resident Evil 4, where she receives her own story scenario: Separate Ways.

\n

Her personality and background are rather mysterious, though she seems to have an affection toward a certain someone (ahem). Ada tends to prefer lightweight, conventional weaponry like handguns and machine guns, but when push comes to shove, she is also a deceptively skilled hand-to-hand combatant.

In a franchise full of badass characters, Ada often gets overlooked by casual fans, which is just too bad.

As it turns out, our original list of the 10 most badass video game characters needs an update. I mean, there are more than 10 badass characters in the pantheon of gaming. Surprising, right?

\n

That is why we decided to whip up a follow-up list including more of those badasses; 10 more, to be precise. Some of these characters are defined by superhuman strength, some by unique traits, some by the armory of weapons they possess, and some by the events they've endured. Ultimately, they are all bound by the same uncanny traits: individually completing meaningful tasks, defeating their enemies and, basically, getting sh** done.

\n

Much like our original list, this one is based on two simple criteria:

\n
    \n
  • Only one character per franchise (per individual list)
  • \n
  • The character is playable at any point in the particular series in question or must represent a playable party of characters
  • \n
\n

Let's get started.

Mercy -- Overwatch

\n

While we're on the Blizzard bandwagon, we can't help but include a nod to the crazy construction efforts of every Mercy cosplayer (give or take the Dr. Ziegler casual fan iteration) who has ever stepped on the convention floor.

\n

The latest event to hit Overwatch (Lunar Year of the Dog) has dumped a huge amount of new material on us. And while it's perhaps unlikely we'll see many of the Zhuque versions of Mercy at conventions (although, if you're considering it... oh, hell yes, please!) there are sure to be a ton of other iterations.

\n

\n

Case in point, Valkyrie (and alternatively, the recolored Sigrun skin), made especially poignant thanks to the recent re-balances (see: nerf) to the character's ultimate/resurrection ability.

\n

Mercy mains will mourn overpowered Valkyrie 1.0 for months to come, and what better way to do it than to do it while wearing the namesake skin?

Nova -- StarCraft II

\n

All right, so StarCraft II isn't exactly "upcoming" in any sense of the word (it only recently went free-to-play last year), but Nova's constant reappearance in other areas of the Blizzard world means something. It also helps that she sports a fairly consistent character design across all of her appearances, making her a pretty easy character to cosplay.

\n

She's a prime character in Heroes of the Storm, and her character design recently made the jump to Blizzard's big-name shooter Overwatch, as well as a skin for French sniper Widowmaker that should do wonders bringing back this blond bombshell.

\n

\n

For any cosplayer with a love of LEDs, Nova is a great choice for a simple, streamlined design... and yet she'll always manage to catch your eye on the con floor. And if you don't have Widowmaker-level booty, Heroes of the Storm has a ton of new source material for alternate Nova skins that should keep the inspiration machine churning for months.

Kratos -- God of War

\n

If you're starting to feel like most of the characters on here are from a Video Gaming's Greatest Hits disc, you're not the only one. It's an interesting year where the biggest upcoming games are either ones that don't exactly lend themselves to interesting costume design (Last of Us 2Red Dead Redemption 2, Metro Exodos, A Way Out) or just don't have any real standout cosplayable characters (Monster Hunter World, Anthem).

\n

However, God of War 4 brings Kratos back to the world of the living -- and gives him a son. It also flings him head-first into the world of Norse mythology, which is an interesting twist in a seven-game legacy based off of Greek mythology.

\n

\n

It helps that while Kratos' base design hasn't changed much, his outfit has been given a little more of an update to correspond with his new surroundings. And what's more, while the original unstoppable rage machine of the original games was what gave Kratos his initial appeal, this unchanging, static ball of hatred was beginning to wear.

\n

A little redemption and a new kind of appeal (what's this, real humanity?) in Kratos sounds like it's in the cards for the God of War franchise, which is why you're much more likely to see a return to cons this year.

Sophitia -- Soulcalibur VI

\n

A sword-wielding staple of the bounce, bounce jiggle, jiggle fest that is the Soulcalibur series, seraphic Sophitia has always more or less managed to walk a fine line between gracefulness and gratuitous boobage -- at least in comparison to, say, Ivy.

\n

Gravity works in every lady's favor in this fighting game franchise, and Soul Calibur 6 aims to bring more story to the franchise, as well as additional mechanics that will help players through its more-than-button-mash learning curve, which should help bring it back to the forefront of the cosplaying community.

\n

Although this iteration has her shirt slit down almost to her naval (no one is fooled by those laces), Sophitia still remains one of the easiest of the reoccurring SC characters to cosplay -- one that keeps all the goods in place, while still allowing for a little leeway when it comes to having the perfect body.

\n

She's also cooler than Cassandra, but that might just be my bias showing.

Fury -- Darksiders III

\n

Aside from my sheer -- and unashamed -- attraction to any pretty face with bright red hair, Fury, from the upcoming hack and slash Darksiders 3easily makes an appearance on this list. Packing a serious punch in both character design and updated apocalyptic lore, there's little doubt other cosplayers will feel the same about D3's heroine.

\n

Originally introduced in Darksiders as one of the Four Horsemen, Darksiders 3 will place the blade-mage center stage as a graceful, cartwheeling, blade whipping protagonist.

\n

Fury Cosplay Germia

\n

The main thing holding keeping early cosplayers from cosplaying as Fury is that her costume isn't an overly simple one craft -- and there just aren't enough resources yet to make it a late-stage endeavor for most cosplayers of any craftsmanship level.

\n

However, this isn't to say that some haven't already gotten a head start: popular Euro cosplayer Germia, for example, has already taken steps to building up several parts of it already! (See above image)

Sora -- Kingdom Hearts III

\n

While a release date is still pending (they swear it's coming out sometime this year!), the hype for Kingdom Hearts 3 has been holding fairly steady over the years. Following a number of teasers, trailers, gameplay videos, and just the natural progression that comes from too many HD remakes, there's no stopping the KH3 hype train.

\n

And one of the most endearing characters from the franchise is Sora -- meaning he's definitely going to be appearing at a con near you this year.

\n

He may have gained a few inches, but our spunky, spiky-haired hero in the over-sized shoes hasn't changed much in terms of character design -- even if his color palette has certainly gotten a shakeup.

\n

\n

With what looks like more than half a dozen costume changes in the upcoming game, Sora's baby face is sure to be a staple in any group cosplay, particularly since silver-haired pretty boy Riku is guaranteed a larger role in KH3 than he's had in previous iterations -- and is just as likely to make it to con floors.

Con season is only just starting to heat up and a whole slew of games are set to release in the coming months that will fuel the cosplay fire.

\n

You're certainly going to see a ton of costumes inspired by new releases, but you're also going to see cosplay inspired by the events and characters of yesteryear -- particularly during the lull where new trends just haven't had time to pop up. See above, for example: never mind her superstar appearance in 2017's Injustice 2, the meteoric hit that was Wonder Woman's origin movie has guaranteed her a girl-power slot on cosplay planning Pinterest boards for years to come.

\n

So in light of that, let's take a look at some of the costumes we think are going to dominate cosplay this con season. From Fury and Mercy to Sora and Kratos, here's what you can expect.

Five Action Games That Could Become The Next Big RTS https://www.gameskinny.com/a7hjk/five-action-games-that-could-become-the-next-big-rts https://www.gameskinny.com/a7hjk/five-action-games-that-could-become-the-next-big-rts Wed, 11 Jan 2017 09:16:00 -0500 Rob Kershaw

Spin-offs are an interesting beast. If you have a hugely successful franchise, there's always the temptation to try and milk it dry by chucking your characters into a completely different genre and seeing if they gain traction.

A lot of the time, they fall flat (like Dizzy's foray into Tetris territory in Panic Dizzy, the light gun-directed point-and-click of Pac Man 2...). Sometimes, they work incredibly well (Mario KartMario Tennis, Mario & Luigi -- yeah, Mario seems to have this covered).

However, the crossover from action game to real-time strategy is an interesting beast, which studios seem averse to exploring. Halo Wars demonstrated that you could take a straightforward FPS and turn it into a polished and surprisingly accessible RTS, but there has been a dearth of similar titles since.

That absence is all the more intriguing, since many action games appear to be perfect candidates for the RTS spin-off treatment. Whether that's due to their existing lore, predesigned units, or perceived ease at which a crossover could take place, it's time someone made the case for new strategy franchises.

In that respect, fear not -- we've thought about it long and hard, so you don't have to.

Battlefield 1

World war is making a comeback in gaming (must...avoid...real world commentary...), so what better way to ride the tide of interest than with an RTS based on the latest revered installment of DICE's franchise?

If you consider it for a moment, all of the pieces are already in place. The classes all translate perfectly into selectable and upgradeable units, meaning that your play area can be littered with tanks, medics, pilots and...um... horses.

The missions can be ripped directly from the FPS campaign's individual War Stories and adapted for strategy purposes. And when the new Battlefield 1 DLC drops this year, there'll be even more meat to pick apart for potential missions.

All told, this could be a killer addition to the franchise. Sure, Company of Heroes may have done something similar. But did it have horses?

No, it did not.

Darksiders

Vigil Games' apocalyptic hack 'n' slash has all the elements needed for a real-time strategy. Think about it. On one side, you have War, Samael, Azrael and Vulgrim. On the other, Abaddon, Uriel, Straga and the Charred Council.

There are angels and demons aplenty, which would make superb ground units. What's more, they're all wildly different -- from massive Gholen through to the smaller Swarm. The individual characters from both sides could act as commanding units, leading the assault and unleashing their supernatural abilities to wreak havoc.

Drawing on its mythic lore, the environments could be pulled from Heaven, Hell and Earth, allowing for a robust and varied series of campaign battles. And persuading Mark Hamill back to voice The Watcher would be a timely move, given his resurgence on the big screen. This one's a definite winner.

DOOM

It's perhaps not a natural candidate for an RTS, but DOOM certainly has potential. Pretty much all of the enemy classes could be ported into varied and interesting units, whilst setting the game in Hell would certainly be a unique locale for a strategy game.

The multiplayer aspect of id Software's reboot is where the most exciting ideas could be culled, however. Hack modules such as "Scout" would work perfectly in giving you a brief overview of where your enemy is located on the battlefield, while "Power Seeker" could be adapted to point players to resources to help tip the campaign in their favour.

Of course, what we'd really want to see is the good guys upgrading their units to allow them to morph into demons, before sending a swarm of Mancubi at the incoming hellspawn army.

That would be lovely.

Titanfall

If there's one game ripe with RTS booty for plundering, it's Titanfall. The huge variety of mega-mechs with varying powers would mesh particularly well with the tactical abilities of the game's pilots. It would allow for a playing field filled with cloaked infantry, an exhausting array of weaponry and a lot of explosions.

Better still, the multiplayer maps would make the perfect foundation for a strategic campaign, and the franchise's rather flimsy storyline can be easily manipulated into something far more digestible over a series of missions.

The crossover would need to be careful not to edge too far into Dawn of War's territory, but if the development team stuck to what they were good at -- massive, interesting units battering the living heck out of each other -- then this could make a surprisingly good RTS.

God of War

Go along with us here. There's an opening for a Kratos-driven RTS that you probably haven't considered. Far from the series being just one man against the entire pantheon of Gods, you may recall that Kratos has had his share of help along the way.

The enemy faction would obviously be overseen by Zeus. There is no shortage of fantastic gods and beasts that could make up the opposing ranks. Medusa, Poseidon, the Kraken? All viable choices. Splendid, that's one side locked down.

The allied faction could be made up of the huge array of characters who stood with Kratos and aided him throughout his entire journey. Cronos would be a great addition to begin with. Hold on, scratch that -- Kratos sliced him open. Hades seemed like a stellar chap, yeah? Well, up until the point where he tried to rip out Kratos' soul, that is. How about Gaia? Nope, that alliance didn't end too well, either. Aphrodite? She'd be good at..erm... Right.

So, it seems that the allied faction would be Kratos and Deimos.

And Deimos is dead.

Look, not every idea is a gold-plated winner, OK?

THQ name lives on as Nordic Games rebrands https://www.gameskinny.com/2881p/thq-name-lives-on-as-nordic-games-rebrands https://www.gameskinny.com/2881p/thq-name-lives-on-as-nordic-games-rebrands Wed, 17 Aug 2016 05:28:40 -0400 Anne-Marie Coyle

The name THQ has been out of the spotlight for a while, as the publisher declared bankruptcy in December 2012 and its assets were auctioned off to various developers a month later.

Following the demise of THQ, Crytek acquired Homefront, Sega snapped up the Warhammer 40,000 series, and South Park: The Stick of Truth went to Ubisoft -- while Metro and Saints Row were bought by Deep Silver. Many of the remaining IPs, including Darksiders, Red Faction, and Destroy All Humans!, were auctioned to a little known publisher called Nordic Games.

In addition to acquiring many of the company's major franchises, Nordic Games bought the rights to the THQ trademark. In order to more closely associate itself with the the recognizable brand, the publisher will now operate under the name THQ Nordic.

Addressing the decision to rebrand, CEO Lars Wingefors said:

"Whilst we take great pride in our Swedish roots and accomplished a great deal under the Nordic Games masthead, we decided it was time to incorporate the THQ name. Those key brands will continue to shape our business in a meaningful way going forward, and THQ Nordic represents a core approach of doing much more than “owning” a highly competitive portfolio of IPs. We cherish them, and align them with the very best development resources to expand upon them with the level of experience that communities and established fan bases expect and deserve."

THQ Nordic has reportedly 23 games in development, 13 of which have yet to be announced -- with the majority of these based on former THQ-owned franchises. Given the recent emphasis on the Darksiders series (Darksiders 2 got a remaster last year and the original is set for the same treatment with Darksiders: Warmastered Edition) our money's on Darksiders 3 being among them.

Kratos On Throne (Exclusive Edition)

\n

Wow. Just wow. Look at that thing. It's incredible.

\n

We finish with the God of War himself, Kratos. This has got to be the coolest statue I've ever seen, and it's a whopping 29 inches tall. Yet another from Gaming Heads, this statue comes in two versions. The regular edition is Kratos without the God of War armor, and the exclusive (read: more expensive) version is the above picture. I think it's obvious which one is better. Unfortunately, the exclusive edition is no longer available, but the standard statue - sans armor - is still up for pre-order and will cost $480.

Goliath

\n

This product is definitely a goliath. Standing at 29 inches tall, this piece is still in pre-order and will cost you $750. For that much money, I feel like it should walk around or something -- just saying.

\n

Either way, the figure looks amazing, and I'd love to get my hands on one.

War and Ruin

\n

Darksiders was an awesome game, so it makes sense that a statue based on the game would be just as awesome. Created by State of the Art Toys, this statue lights up, similar to the Diablo statue. The detail in this piece is breathtaking, particularly War's sword, which sports quite the complicated design pattern. Unfortunately, this is one of the only ones I cannot find anywhere, and so is unavailable. Oh well.

Diablo

\n

Do I need to say anything? It's Diablo and he glows. HE GLOWS! I'm just gonna leave it at that.

\n

Price wise, this one sits at $350 on Sideshow but is sold out and can instead be found on Amazon for $720 or $999.

Raiden

\n

I love this statue. This piece was perfectly crafted by Gecco, a Japanese company. This one is special in that it also comes with some interchangeable parts, something most of the others on this list don't do. It comes with a red visor to go over Raiden's face, as well as a red sword and the sword sheath to place in his other hand.

\n

Another plus is that it seems to be the most reasonably priced on this list, listed at $219. In fact, I might buy it right now...I'll be right back.

Tali'Zorah vas Normandy

\n

Another one from Gaming Heads, Tali was an easy choice since she is one of the best characters in the Mass Effect series. This statue boasts amazing detail, especially in the hood of Tali's suit.

\n

If Tali isn't quite your cup of tea, you can always check out Garrus and Liara as well. They are equally well-crafted. But who cares about them, right? I think we can all agree that Tali is the best.

\n

Right now, Tali is still up for pre-order and you can nab her for $330, or the exclusive version for $340.

The Clicker

\n

These guys give me nightmares, so of course I'd love to have one in my house. Made by Gaming Heads, the clicker stands at 19 inches tall and is one of the grossest looking collectibles out there. But the details are so well done that you can't help but want it.

\n

They're still up for pre-order at $350, if you'd like to get one.

Edward Kenway Resin Statue

\n

McFarlane Toys is responsible for this 14-inch, $400 beauty, which shows the notorious pirate Edward Kenway enjoying a lovely jaunt down a beach. This is one of my personal favorites, purely because of the attention to detail. Kenway's costume is one of the more complicated designs of the Assassin's Creed universe, so to see it rendered with such accuracy and care makes this one of the best I've ever seen.

Link on Epona

\n

Created by First 4 Figures, this statue stands 17 inches tall. This one is cool because who doesn't like Zelda? I mean Link...of course I meant Link. This particular statue is based on The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, and also comes in an exclusive faux bronze finish that honestly looks kinda ugly. In case you were wondering (and if you weren't I'll tell you anyway) that exclusive version is selling for over $2,500 on Amazon. Sheesh.

Nathan Drake Premium Format Figure

\n

We start with Uncharted's Nathan Drake. Created by Sideshow Collectibles, this statue is just pure awesome. Sitting at 16.5 inches tall, the attention to detail on this piece is incredible.

\n

What really stands out to me, though, is the way they created such realistic looking clothing. Not to mention they got Nathan's face one hundred percent right, something that is more difficult than you'd think. As for price, this one is $350 from Sideshow, but since it's sold out there you can go to Amazon and find it for...wait for it...$550.

\n

I personally wonder where Drake is running off to, though I suspect it's to break up with Elena again.

Darksiders II: Deathinitive Edition, 2015's Halloween Treat https://www.gameskinny.com/0j17y/darksiders-ii-deathinitive-edition-2015s-halloween-treat https://www.gameskinny.com/0j17y/darksiders-ii-deathinitive-edition-2015s-halloween-treat Mon, 12 Oct 2015 19:35:45 -0400 Gabriella Graham

Roughly three years after its initial release date, Nordic Games and Gunfire Games announced the official return of Darksiders II, jumping into the pre-holiday fray with a "Deathinitive Edition". Death returns in all his newly-resoluted glory October 27th on both PS4 and Xbox One, in boxed and digital formats. The price point is sitting at at $29.99 USD/EUR, according to an October 6th press release.

Fans of the series will notice a heavy emphasis on graphic improvements in the Deathinitive Edition. Experienced developers involved in the franchise's past installments returned for the new edition, this time working under Gunfire Games rather than the closed Vigil Games.

John Pearl, the Design Director at Gunfire Games, commented about being one of these original staff members:

“It’s rare that as developers we get the opportunity to revisit one of our previous games. The passage of time and the numerous games we’ve worked on since Darksiders II shipped has allowed us to return to it with a fresh perspective.

With that said, we went back to what is a huge game and addressed things we didn’t have time for or didn’t notice the first time. We started by revisiting every asset in the game, increasing the texture resolutions, and brought the art up to spec to take full advantage of the new lighting and rendering.

Darksiders II has a lot of DLC in the form of weapons, armor and unique locations. These pieces of DLC, which felt separate from the main campaign, have now been integrated into the game and rebalanced accordingly. Lastly, we’ve addressed much of the feedback we received after the game’s release in regards to balance and bugs. With all these changes, this is truly the Definitive Edition of Darksiders II.

For those who don't have the list memorized or handy, the DLC that Pearl references includes:

  • Maker Armor Set
  • The Abyssal Forge
  • The Demon Lord Belial
  • Death Rides
  • Angel of Death
  • Deadly Despair
  • Shadow of Death
  • Mortis Pack
  • Rusanov's Axe
  • Van Der Schmash Hammer
  • Fletcher's Crow Hammer
  • Mace Maximus
  • Argul's Tomb

If you purchase the Deathinitive Edition, all this DLC will come included.

But the DLC isn't the only good thing about this edition.

Not only were lots of bugs squashed and tuned (a real relief to fans who struggled through all the glitches in its 2012 release), but the game's loot distribution system has also been reworked.

The graphics deserve some extra attention, as they tend to give the aforementioned loot a little more shine. The atmospheric-reliant game runs in native 1080p resolution, but as the quote above reveals, the enhancements didn't end there. Revamped character models strut their stuff, while changes in the game's lighting effects help all the adjustments pop. Pearl commented more elaborately on this with a release of before-and-after makeover stills in the spring. He explains that developers sought to mimic the physically-based textures that many of the industry's current game engines utilize:

"What this means visually is metal, leather, stone and skin look and respond to light as you would expect them to in the real world. This new rendering method meant we revisited every texture and surface in the game, reworking and re-authoring them for the new renderer. To take full advantage of these texture changes, we’ve also gone back and relit the entire game."

Here are some photos that show all these upgrades and enhancements:

For fans who prefer the visual of gameplay to a handful of photos, Gunfire Games hosted a streaming event via Twitch on October 6th. Joe Madureira and Ryan Stefanelli were featured as special guests from Airship Syndicate for the occasion.

So do you think the newly rendered game is worth another play-through? Is there any particular feedback the developers should have turned to in their quest for a better game? Caius Ballad's Ragnarok

Final Fantasy XIII-2

Undoubtedly, Final Fantasy has some seriously big swords that could make it’s own top ten list, but to be fair to the other swords out there I had to refrain from adding all of them in such a general list. However, I’d be remiss to not add Caius’ Ragnarok. The sword easily joins Soul Calibur with being both big and beautiful.

Protagonist's Buster Sword

\n
God Eater
\n

Much like Monster Hunters, God Eater is full of huge swords, including this Buster Sword. It certainly isn’t your Cloud Strife sword, though it does resemble it - granted with some add-ons to make it a God Eater exclusive. This however isn't the only Buster style sword within the game, so if you get a chance you should definitely check out the game and see all the variations of this pretty popular style sword.

War's Chaoseater

\n
Darksiders 2
\n

War of Darksiders is a pretty big guy with a pretty big responsibility, so it only makes sense that he has a huge sword. The aptly named Chaoseater, also known as “the angry blade”, has the ability to absorb Chaos energy from defeated enemies and give War the eventual ability to tap into his Chaos Form.

\n

If you think Chaoseater is big already, you should see it in its Chaos Form!

Riven's Dragonblade

League of Legends

Big swords aren’t just for knights, monster hunters, and bio-enhanced soldiers. In the realm of video games, girls can hang with the big boys and swing just as big, if not bigger swords. There’s no shield like a Dragonblade sword, and League of Legends femme fatale Riven happens to wield it.

Rathalo's Sword Axe

\n
Monster Hunter
\n

Monster Hunter is filled with some ridiculously huge weaponry, including Rathalos’ Sword Axe. Pretty much every sword in the game should make the list, but since it’s a top ten, Rathalos’ massive hybrid weapon is more than acceptable to represent the big swords of Monster Hunter. If you're into sword hybrids, give Monster Hunter a look as there are plenty of hybrid styled weapons throughout the game.

Garland's Sword

\n
Dissidia Final Fantasy
\n

Garland may not have an official name for his sword, but we know it will “knock you all down!” The sword makes its debut on the Dissidia Final Fantasy battlefield, and while it might not be impressive in design, it is impressive in size. And that’s all that matters.

Sephiroth's Masamune

\n
Final Fantasy VII
\n

Sephiroth’s Masamune might not be massive, but it is long. In fact, he probably has the longest sword in video game history - and that’s saying something. It’s only a wonder how he’s never managed to poke someone’s eye out. He did, however, nail Cloud Strife right in the shoulder several yards away in the epic battle during Advent Children

Cloud Strife's Buster Sword

\n
Final Fantasy VII
\n

The Buster Sword is absolutely one of the most well-known big bad swords out there - and for good reason: it’s larger than the wielder. Good thing video games aren’t about practicality, because if they were, there’d be no way that Cloud could properly lift this thing, let alone fight.

Siegfried’s Soul

\n
Soul Calibur
\n

If Soul Calibur was looked at in the same light of Beauty and the Beast, than the sword certainly would be the beauty. Admittedly, Siegfried’s Soul Calibur isn’t as big as Soul Edge, but it still is an impressive sword in both style and size. Don’t let the fragile look fool you though, it’s more than capable in doing some serious damage.

Nightmare's Soul Edge

\n
Soul Calibur
\n

You can’t make a top ten list without including Soul Edge. This sword isn’t just huge, it’s the source of so much turmoil in the Soul Calibur franchise. It made Siegfried into Nightmare after all. You know, before Siegfried managed to break free of the corruption only for the sword to manifest into a completely new Nightmare.

\n

For a corrupted sword, Soul Edge is pretty sick - no pun intended, but it does have some pretty crazy variations the more corrupt and powerful Nightmare gets. Not to mention, it gets bigger!

If Pillars of Eternity fails to show up in the Steam Summer Sale I'm sure I'm not the only one who will be cross with it.

This quickly renown classic RPG that pulls inspiration from games like Baldur's Gate demands to be played by its own rules — literally. They created a completely new game system just for Pillars of Eternity instead of pulling from Dungeons and Dragons for the calculations.

Nothing is quite like a great RPG in a fascinating setting, which is why I have Pillars of Eternity wishlisted going into this year's Steam Summer Sale.

I know Dark Souls gets a lot of bad rep — yes, bad rep — for being a terrifyingly difficult game. Personally, I would never recommend a game that's hard for the sake of being hard. That's just plain brutality.

After sinking many hours into the first Dark Souls in recent weeks, I have come to adore the unparalleled sense of immersion found in From Software's titles.

At the end of Darksiders War is banished due to him breaking the rules, he went to Earth without the proper authorization, however, he was tricked into thinking the signs were real. This is where Darksiders 2 starts, Death wants to clear his brother's name, to do this he needs to turn back time. There is one pretty major catch, Death must sacrifice himself or the souls of the Nephilim to turn back time.

\n

And this is where the cliffhanger arrives, what happens to Death? What happens to War? I don't want to speculate about story lines because Vigil Games are far better at that than I. But that doesn't stop the fact that a great series has not be closed, and it deserves to be ended.

#2 - Don't Make Fury Angry
\n

The final Horseman (or Horsewoman?) is Fury, she needs to be playable!

\n

Each Darksiders game has one main protagonist, but maybe Darksiders 3 can have two? Where at the beginning of the game you pick who you want to play as, and the story unfolds slightly differently, why not have Strife and Fury playable in the same game. Then in Darksiders 4 you can play as any of the horsemen.

\n

Fury wields a whip as her main weapon and claws for secondary. Not much is known about her personality, but she appears to be calmest of the Horsemen.

\n

As Fury is level headed she could have an 'at peace' meter, as it fills up it will allow Fury to transform into something else, like with Death's Reaper form, she can then do higher damage, but also move a lot faster. Fury should be a very fast character using her agility do acrobatic attacks, and even some stealth, which, of course, will mean we need better AI and it MUST be optional --no forced stealth and no 'if detected you instantly fail' sections.

\n

With the whip, Fury is then able to pull people from higher, or lower, places and maybe use it Indiana Jones style for swinging. Fury should have a much faster gameplay style, think more like Prince of Persia --Warrior Within specifically.

#1 - There are FOUR horsemen, not TWO - Strife
\n

War and Death have their own games, but Strife is left out. Is that fair? And he isn't the only one.

\n

Strife (second in from the left) is known for his excellent marksmanship. He wields two pistols, Mercy and Redemption.

\n

This could allow for an expanding on the shooting mechanics employed by the current games to a more 3rd person style, for only the shooting. However, if this game become a third person shooter that would be pretty disastrous, but just using the mechanics.

\n

The game could be based on stylistic shooting, employing a Matrix style bullet time and diving mechanics, maybe even wall running mixed with the standard Darksiders abilities and melee.

Darksiders was developed by Vigil Games and previously published by THQ. Ever since THQ went under it's now published by Nordic Games. Darksiders is a series of two games which follows two of the four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, War and Death in each game respectively.

\n

Both games play very differently from each other, War is lumbering and slow, you have to play a lot more tactically with him --think an easy version of Dark Souls. On the other hand, Death is wiry and quick, climbing over obstacles and leaping from ledges. Where War uses brute force and tactics, Death is more nimble.

\n

With a rumoured Darksiders 2 for Xbox One and PS4 version on the horizon, does this mean Nordic Games and Vigil Games are preparing the groundwork for a Darksiders 3? I sure hope they are, and these are the 3 things Darksiders 3 could include.

11.) Darksiders - Tiamat
\n

During the first phase of the fight Tiamat will fly around the outside of the tower never giving War a chance to attack her with the Chaos Eater. Instead War must throw the bomb growths at her, and then light them with the use of the Crossblade. After a few hits Tiamat will land and begin the second phase of the fight where she will face War in close quarters combat. After defeating Tiamat, War promptly removes her still beating heart from her chest, a brutal and epic death.

12.) Bioshock - Frank Fontaine
\n

After the legendary “Would You Kindly?” reveal scene, Jack must face Atlas aka frank Fontaine. Although the fight is fairly basic, it was the build up to this fight that really shocked me. I don’t want to spoil anything for those who have not had the pleasure of playing Bioshock, but it is well worth it.

13.) Final Fantasy 9 - Trance Kuja / Necron
\n

Upon defeating Trance Kuja, he will use the ability Ultima which will send the entire party to the Hill of Despair, where Necron is fought. After seeing what has happened to Kuja, Necron decides that all of humanity shall be destroyed and brought back to nothingness, so that they may never experience the pain and suffering that Kuja had to endure. If you manage to defeat Necron he will be impressed with the party’s will and ability to persevere and allows the world to continue on.

14.) Super Mario RPG - Culex
\n

A secret boss that is found in Monstro Town, Culex comes with 4 crystals--Fire, Water, Lightning, and Earth--and will wipe the floor with your party if you are not near the level cap. Although Culex is not in any other game, he is a reference to the Final Fantasy series, and his master is supposedly the Black Mage.

15.) Kingdoms of Amalur - Balor
\n

The first major boss in Kingdoms Of Amalur is quite epic, and disgusting looking. The ancient Niskaru lord of destruction, Balor is fought at the final battle of Mel Senshir, where the Fateless One promptly kicks its teeth in. Just be careful for its massive eye beam attack, and its slam attack.

\n

Getting to Wingate in Gun Smoke is a challenge by itself, but when you actually face him you need to kill him 3 times. 17.) Cabal - The Submarine
\n

A very old Nintendo Entertainment System game that is a cover-based shooter. But beware enemies can destroy your cover leaving you vulnerable to attacks. The most memorable boss fight in Cabal for me was the Submarine. Upon completing one of the stages, you come to what looks like a lake and a submarine emerges shooting a wall of bullets at you. Use your cover wisely, because the boss can destroy it in about 3 hits.

18.) Remember Me - Madame
\n

This fight is really cool and requires you to use every ability at your disposal, never using the same thing twice. This 3 phase fight was brutal for me on the hard difficulty, seeing as it was a learning experience and most of the time I was getting my face smashed. Not only is it challenging in difficulty because of the endless amount of enemies coming at you, but also because of the ever-changing tactics of the fight. Definitely one of the best fights in the game.

19.) Twisted Metal 2 - Dark Tooth
\n

Twisted Metal 2 is one of the best Twisted Metal games of all time. After defeating all of the enemies in Hong Kong, Dark Tooth will emerge saying “You killed my son! I want my little clown boy back!” The vehicle itself is nearly 6 times the size of Sweet Tooth and has 2 phases. After finally defeating the massive blackened ice cream truck, the spinning head on top detaches and begins attacking you. I always enjoyed the ending that is shown when you defeat Dark Tooth with Hammer Head. “We want the ability to fly!”

20.) Super Smash Bros. Melee - Crazy Hand / Master Hand
\n

Getting to Master Hand was an easy task, but if you wished to test your mettle you would try and fight Crazy Hand. In order to do so you need to get to Master Hand in less than 18 minutes and without continuing, only then would Crazy Hand show up to the fight. Unlike Master Hand, Crazy Hand’s movements and attacks are fast and erratic, making the fight a lot more challenging. If you lose all your lives and have to continue, then Crazy Hand will not reappear.

There have been some really cool, and most epic boss fights in the history of video games. But with there being so many, how do we know which ones are the best? It's all a matter of opinion, with that said this is my list for the 100 best boss fights of all time.

\n

What makes a boss fight the best? Well a number of things; the fight has to be memorable, it can also be epic, or outright insane. A boss fight can be unforgiving in difficultly, or it can be as simple as pressing the A button. Whatever the boss fight is, all that matters is that I enjoyed it in one way or another.

Nordic Games Will Continue The Darksiders Franchise https://www.gameskinny.com/dqnqq/nordic-games-will-continue-the-darksiders-franchise https://www.gameskinny.com/dqnqq/nordic-games-will-continue-the-darksiders-franchise Mon, 12 May 2014 11:00:09 -0400 Kaelan Otto

For several years, THQ Inc. struggled with financial issues and an increasing amount of debt, and wasn't until December of 2012 that the company had no choice but to declare bankruptcy. Due to this unfortunate event, many employees were laid off and licenses of their games were either acquired or auctioned off to other game developers.

THQ was well-known for their titles including the Saints Row series, Red Faction series, MX vs. ATV, Dawn of War series and the Darksiders game; they help created some games for companies like WWE, Nickelodeon, Disney and Pixar.

Most gamers knew about the downfall of THQ last year, so that being said, some of you might be wondering, "What happened to the Darksiders series?"

Darksiders and Darksiders 2 were developed by Vigil Games, a game company founded in 2005 and owned by THQ. They, too, closed down due to bankruptcy. Before they were shut down, the company was in the middle of making Warhammer 40,000: Dark Millennium and so far, no confirmation has made if the game was completely cancelled.

At the time of THQ's closure, Nordic Games GmbH, an Austrian game publisher founded in 2011, managed to acquire the rights to Darksiders, along with Red Faction, MX vs. ATV, Destroy All Humans and a few other franchises. When asked about potential sequels by Polygon, Nordic Games CEO, Lars Wingefors, replied by saying:

"We will look into all possibilities, but I don't want to repeat the mistakes of THQ and bring out unprofitable products. Then your days are over. You need to find the right [development] team and build a smart business model around it.

"I do think there is great potential, most of these games have sold in the millions. There is a love for these titles. Red Faction has millions of fans. They were disappointed with the last installment, but I think there is potential in it. And of course Darksiders, everyone, everyone would like to see something come from that."

Back in March, Nordic Games released Darksiders Complete for Windows PC--the bundle included both Darksiders and Darksiders 2. The Xbox 360 and PS3 versions were also announced; but neither have a release date yet.

Nordic Games wrote in their forums to ask fans what they should do next with the Darksiders. Ryan Stefanelli, one of the co-founders of Vigil Games, wrote:

"As one of the co-founders of Vigil and the lead level designer/principal designer on both games, all I can say is... make it adventurous. And do what we would've done: let people know what happens when those other three comets land on Earth!"

Business and product developement director of Nordic Games, Reinhard Pollice, replied to them with this:

"The tale of the four horsemen has not been told to an end," he wrote. "So far we only know the story of War and Death but what about the other two? How will it go on? What did you enjoy most about Darksiders and Darksiders II? What did you absolutely dislike? What kind of Darksiders game do you wish should be created next?

"Please let us know!"

Earlier today on Facebook, comic book artist and former creative director of Vigil Games, Joe Madureira, hinted a Darksiders related announcement coming soon. What does this mean? Well, in one of his post, he stated:

"Darksiders-- DS is not dead!!! The new owner, Nordic seems very committed to continuing the series. As far as my involvement, I can't say at this point. Hopefully we will all have exciting news about the franchise soon!!!!!"

For now, there has been no more information on Darksiders, but we expect to hear something from Nordic Games sometime this year.

THQ's Final Liquidation Approved https://www.gameskinny.com/wlkoz/thqs-final-liquidation-approved https://www.gameskinny.com/wlkoz/thqs-final-liquidation-approved Wed, 17 Jul 2013 13:43:42 -0400 Capt. Eliza Creststeel

Seven months since the troubled game publisher declared bankruptcy on December 19th, U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Mary F. Walrath granted permission to a plan for THQ to pay back some outstanding debts.

"THQ has met the burden of establishing that the plan should be approved, and I will confirm it."

According to Bloomberg, the liquidation agreement would divvy up some $78.6 million in company assets, $72 million of which comes from recent game property sell offs. These sell offs included their popular Saints Row, South Park and Company of Heroes franchises among others.

Remaining properties were sold only a few months ago, including Darksiders for an estimated $6.6 million.

Before the bankruptcy declaration, THQ had an outstanding debt of some $248 million and only an estimated $204.8 million in assets at the time. The balance will be paid to their creditors on a case-by-case basis. Most unsecured investors will recoup between 20%-52% of what they are actually owed.

THQ's overseas investors are still looking to recoup their losses.

Sega said last week they will be suing THQ in regards to Company of Heroes 2 pre-order sales.

Darksiders - You Don't Know A Good Game Till It's Gone https://www.gameskinny.com/2ps38/darksiders-you-dont-know-a-good-game-till-its-gone https://www.gameskinny.com/2ps38/darksiders-you-dont-know-a-good-game-till-its-gone Tue, 14 May 2013 14:43:30 -0400 Prodigious Jay

The title practically speaks for itself, just as the old adage "You don't know how good you have it until you lost it."

I maybe paraphrasing a bit, mixing one saying with another, but the idea still stays the same. I bring this up now in the lull before the big console wars flare up later this month and then grow even bigger once E3 rolls around. Something didn't occur to me till just now, seeing a gaming franchise snuffed out long before I get around to discovering its potential.

Hindsight really is 20/20, isn't it?

Moments before I started writing this article, I just finished my first playthrough of a game (that I have to say was amazing) called Darksiders. Developed by Vigil Games and produced by the now closed THQ, Darksiders is a game that puts us dead center in the conflict raging between Heaven and Hell. You fill the role of one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse: War, and this all-out battle is right up his alley.

Now I won't go into gruesome details, as this is not meant to be a review of darksiders0[1]the game, but merely bringing to light some thing I noticed. The game was a good one; it had depth, story, twists and turns, and followed a pretty linear model of gameplay. While it may have had a few technical issues and copied heavily off a few franchises (God of War, Jak and Daxter, and even Portal seem to have had great influence on this title), the game delivered a solid and somewhat powerful entry into a franchise that was marked for at least 4 titles.

This is where the revelation hit as hard as a blue tortoise shell.

With THQ defunct and Vigil Games, last I checked, not being spoken for by any company, the series was left hanging in the air with only 2 of the 4 finished and released. This game, a game with so much potential and depth, will only live on story wise in our minds and hearts as well as in the stories of every fan fic writer in the world who loved the series.

darksiders_ii_2-wallpaper-1680x1260I haven't picked up the second installment yet, but I can say that without a shadow of a doubt that I will certainly be just as crestfallen as I was when the thought occurred to me at the end of Darksiders.

I hate being the last one to the party--most of the excitement has already faded from those party animals who played the game back on its original release. I can say that at least I got to experience the joy of the game and hope to see the second one improve where the first had fallen short.

The lesson is, don't take your time to do anything in this life. Whether it be something like sky diving or something simple like playing a game all the way through when it first comes out. We miss out on so much by hesitating and I'm living proof. If there is a series out there that you want to play but have been putting it off, pop that sucker in the console and finish it for goodness sake!
