Virtual Reality was the talk of E3 2016, with Sony dedicating a large chunk of its conference to the new and exciting technology. Even HTC and Oculus made some big splashes at the event with showcases of their own VR headsets. But a year later at E3 2017, that same excitement had almost completely dissipated.

Before the mass market's loss of interest, however, the hype for both the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive was out of this world and PSVR made the idea of Virtual Reality gaming seem easier to access than ever. But following an all too frequent trend of over-hyped products, it seems that VR was not the new best way of gaming that we were promised. Let's take a look back at how the state of VR came to be how we know it today.

Sales

VR systems were supposed to be the hot ticket item for fall/winter of 2016. Reporting sales of 1 million headsets, Sony had the biggest market share. They're not bad sales figures but it's no where near what Sony was expecting. In February, CSS Insight predicted that VR sales would increase by 800 percent by 2021, so maybe the future is brighter than we think for this new technology.

High expectations for the new devices were set and they didn't perform how we imagined. Ultimately, that hurt the sales worse than anyone expected, based on the positive reaction to their over-hyped marketing. The low sales figures were then mostly interpreted as Virtual Reality being a failed idea. But since VR is still a fairly new, and continuously developing technology, it needs time to grow and find its place in the market.

Marketing

A possible hiccup for VR was the marketing. Every company, first and foremost, is trying to sell you a product. Because of this, it's easy to over-hype something in marketing materials and press conferences, setting an incredibly high bar in terms of expectations.

While the gaming community was focused and fixated on VR, the general public did not share the same enthusiasm. This is possibly because there was too much variety, too soon into the life-cycle of Virtual Reality.

The average consumer may not know the difference between the $598 Oculus Rift and the $15 Google Cardboard. Therefore it can be hard for the general public to wrap their heads around what VR actually is, and this confusion is enough for most consumers to forego early adoption in favour of a wait-and-see approach.

Virtual Reality Software

In the gaming community, it seems there is just a dissatisfaction with the content that has been produced so far for VR headsets. Early on there was not a high diversity in their game library. EVE: Valkyrie and Batman: Arkham VR were a couple of big titles, both receiving mixed reviews. EVE received complaints because of its overuse of microtransactions and Batman: Arkham VR was said to have clunky controls that were frustrating at times. While there have been some VR indie gems to come out of this, they're not system selling titles that each of the headsets needed to stand out.

To wrap this all up, VR is not dead but there simply isn't the same hype around it any more. There are still some promising games coming out such as Skyrim VR and numerous indie games like The Climb, but nothing truly exciting. That being said, it is still a unique gaming peripheral that can provide a very engaging experience for the player, but it is up to developers to figure out how to make that experience a truly unique and wonderful one.

If you invested in a headset, you will certainly get some use out of it but perhaps not in the same way that was thought back in 2016, before the decline in popularity.

It'll offer tons of VR gameplay without having to spend more money right off the bat after digging into your pockets for the headset and required additional accessories. There will be tons of games supporting VR as we finish 2016 and even more to follow throughout next year, but this is all a great start during launch in October.

The Playroom VR

\n

Just as the current Playroom is free, Playroom VR will be as well, giving everyone with VR headsets something to enjoy immediately after purchase. While it does look a little cheesy, it also looks like a ton of fun when playing with a few friends with a handful of mini games.

\n

Hunt ghosts in Ghostbusters inspired fashion, play a Tom and Jerry cat-and-mouse mini game, Godzilla-like chasing and destruction, or a wild west shootout in a saloon. The full PlayStation game page for Playroom VR has a lot of pictures and added descriptions for you to learn more about.

Job Simulator: The 2050 Archives

\n

If you think coming home from your job to play a job simulator sounds ridiculously lame and miserable, you'll think twice when you see the gameplay of this VR title. While I'm not entirely sure about how the game will implement any kind of story or objectives, the complete randomness of interacting with things at your desk looks to be pretty hilarious and fun, even if just for a little while.

\n

Nothing is off limits with this game, and it could prove to be a good anger management simulator. Throw that cup of hot coffee over the cubical in the video game and still keep your day job in the real world. There's a few different 'jobs' to do, allowing for diverse gameplay and fun. Don't forget to check out the full PlayStation game page for more of these details.

Until Dawn: Rush of Blood

\n

If you've already played Until Dawn, you're well aware that the foundations of this young franchise are decision-making and tons of jump-scares. Rush of Blood is focusing on the same aspects from before, but changing up the gameplay this time around.

\n

It plays out as a rail shooter in a nightmare rollercoaster. Dual-wield 6 different types of weapons and progress through several different levels while also competing for global leaderboard positions. The full PlayStation game page will go into slightly more detail, but also provides a few extra images.

Battlezone

\n

Reviving the classic tank warfare experience, the updated version of the VR franchise Battlezone brings innovation and combat to life like never before. Developed by Rebellion, you'll be able to wage heavy metal ground war in multiplayer as well as single player campaign (co-op optional). It takes place in a retro-futuristic world and yields great attention to detail and stunning graphics. You can check out its official PlayStation game page for more images and details.

EVE: Valkyrie

\n

The backstory of the game is raising debate in a great story. A man known as Fatal is stealing the consciousness of fallen pilots to work for him by means of illegal technology, and placing them into clones. The game is a space-based combat shooter with a focus on multiplayer action, but includes a more than interesting looking single player campaign.

\n

\n

The official PlayStation game page has a lot of interesting information about the game, including deeper story details, as well as this overview description:

\n
\n

"Live out the fantasy and thrill of being an elite spaceship pilot in the sprawling sci-fi universe of EVE.

\n

Join the Valkyrie, an outlaw band of galactic pirates, and take up arms to claim what's yours. Trade cannon fire for cash as you chase wealth and notoriety on the edge of space.

World War Toons

\n

If Battlefield 1 was an animated cartoon game for kids (and VR supported) it would look exactly like this. A fun light-hearted take on historic warfare, but one that I'm sure will still allow for great competition. You change classes with pick-ups located around the map, and there's even tanks that players can become.

\n

The interesting part is how those two ideas mesh together. Which class of infantry you are playing as when you become the tank will determine which specialty of tank you'll play as. The game will also be playable without the VR headset, extending the potential player base for it right out the gate. Don't forget to check out the full PlayStation game page for more info.

CCP, the developers of EVE: Online, announced today on Twitter that their latest title EVE: Valkyrie will support the upcoming VR headsets, PlayStation VR and HTC Vive.

What is EVE: Valkyrie?

EVE: Valkyrie is a multiplayer dogfighting shooter, set in the EVE: Online universe. It is the launch title of Facebook's VR headset, the Oculus Rift. The player takes on the role of an elite space fighter pilot who is a member of a pirate faction.

The player has to fight against other pirate factions for wealth, supremacy, and notoriety. The game features single player PVE modes, skill-based character progression, ships upgrades, competitive social multiplayer action, and a deep story based on the EVE Universe.

The ultimate dogfighting experience

CCP is aiming to deliver the ultimate space dogfighting experience with EVE: Valkyrie. It uses the most technologically advanced video game technology along with VR to further enhance the experience.

If you were thinking of playing EVE: Valkyrie but were not looking to invest in the Oculus Rift, you soon will be able to. Playstation VR is due for release in October. A date for compatibility with EVE: Valkyrie for the HTC Vive is yet to be announced but estimated to be this year.

What are your thoughts on EVE: Valkyrie? What VR headset are you most interested in? Let me know in the comments below.

Which virtual reality (VR) system will be the best after all? Perhaps it is too early to tell. The competition within the VR products is intense.  According to Game Informer, 29 games will be released on either one of the VR consoles on March 28. Hence having more revenue streams can ensure profitability.  In addition,  VR Games for, lists all of the games and the VR platforms that they are planning to release on by March 28 as well as those released prior this date:

In a recent survey conducted by Statista, these three VR headsets have the most market shares among US consumers 19 to 49 years old.  At the moment, Oculus Rift is the market leader of virtual reality. However, it is only by a small margin because of its excellent marketing campaign and brand recognition. Samsung Gear VR was actually the first to enter the VR market with mobile integration. Unfortunately, it is losing to Oculus Rift at the moment as its more focused on competing with Apple in the smart phone market.

According to the Sony Tokyo Game Show, reviewers think Sony Project Morpheus has better graphics than the others on the market. As for the rest, TechRadar reports that Microsoft HoloLens, Razer OSVR, HTC Vive and Google Cardboard are fighting for market share in VR technology as well.

However, some game developers are making the most of an emerging and fiercely competitive market.  CCP Games is one of the companies using this business strategy.

As there are no definite winner in the VR system competition yet, the best strategy for such situation is to enter all markets! This means more players can play your game. For example, CCP Games, an Icelandic video game developer and publisher, is going to release Eve Valkyrie on Oculus Rift and Sony Project Morpheus while Eve Gunjack is released on Samsung Gear VR. Both games share very similar characteristics such as environment, background music and play style.

Nevertheless, even the VR technology itself has a competitor to worry about. Augmented Reality is a technology that is directly competing with virtual reality with its similar functionalities. It is an emerging technology that is not only for gaming, but can be used in medicine, the military, design, education and administration... fields. In conclusion, the future of VR technology and will dominate is still a mystery and the safest option is to be familiar with most of them.

EVE: Valkyrie Alpha just around the corner https://www.gameskinny.com/kdnbj/eve-valkyrie-alpha-just-around-the-corner https://www.gameskinny.com/kdnbj/eve-valkyrie-alpha-just-around-the-corner Wed, 06 Jan 2016 12:33:44 -0500 shox_reboot

2016 is shaping up to be one of the better years for gamers everywhere with the amount of titles announced. Particularly for those who have been waiting for more space sims.

It looks like EVE: Valkyrie, developed by CCP Games, will be the one to kick things off this year with the announcement of its alpha, enabling players around the world with an Oculus Rift DK2 to sign up for the alpha beginning on the 18th of January via the official website

Now that's out the way, for those who might be wondering what EVE: Valkyrie is all about, it's a multiplayer dogfighting shooter set in the EVE Online universe. You know, that notoriously hardcore MMO set in space?

EVE: Valkyrie looks a lot less complicated!

If you were one of the first waves who pre-ordered the Oculus Rift headset, EVE: Valkyrie will be one of the games bundled with it on its release on March 28, 2016. To those that pre-order later, a later ship date will follow.

Keep in mind though that while EVE: Valkyrie is a launch title for the Oculus Rift, it is still considered 'early access'. In CCP's words:

We consider early access to EVE: Valkyrie as a launch title for the Oculus Rift, and we plan to continue to add features to the game long after the Rift hits shelves, at no additional charge.

EVE: Valkyrie will be available on the PlayStation 4 as well as a PlayStation VR title.
